[Solved] Skype causes system crash

Hi guys,

For a little while by now already, skype sometimes randomly causes my system to crash, i.e. everything freezes, the laptop doesn't react on any keys/... anymore and all I can do is turn off the laptop and restart...
These are the last couple lines from the kernel.log of one of the last crashes a couple days back:

I would really appreciate every help I can get, since I'm using skype a lot and on a regular basis!!

Many Thanks and Regards

Re: [Solved] Skype causes system crash

Okay, today I've set up a completely new Arch 64 Bit system - and the same thing happened again!!
What I did:
I started skype, I made a "Skype Test Call", during the call I went to the options and clicked "Test Webcam" - and the whole system froze, leaving me only the option to switch the laptop off by pressing the on/off switch for a couple seconds.

I now didn't boot into the same system again (I have my old system still installed), so the logs are untouched since the crash. However, I wasn't able to see anything that could be meaningful in any of them. The extract I posted in the first post isn't there either. If anyone wants to see the last lines of some log, I'm happy to post it...

This happens independently from the wm, I experienced this issue in KDE and in Openbox. Since I use Skype very often, this really is very annoying. Anybody an idea??

Re: [Solved] Skype causes system crash

You should probably post a little more information.

For example; what video card / driver? (and version) what webcam??... are you using ALSA or Pulseaudio with skype?

you are vague about when this problem actually began...do you have any idea when it may have started? (more specifically)...

Things i noticed in your output was your soundcard (snd-hda-intel) seems to be having issues, and your network card is throwing warnings...

Some ideas/tips/things to try;

-> have you searched the forums for (newish) skype threads? -> i think there are 'at least' a few people experiencing problems similar to yours, recently.

-> have you read entirely through the wiki on skype;

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Skype

-> test you webcam in another application; I have seen recently that some webcams are crashing people's systems, such as noted in this thread;

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=139601

this thread was linked to from a skype thread. It is possible it could be a webcam issue - I know my own webcam isn't working quite right (but it doesn't crash my system). If you have 'cheese' installed (or some other webcam using application) ~ then you could verify if you webcam itself is working properly...

-> modify/delete/create some of skype's stored settings, discussed in this thread;

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=116389&p=3

I recommend reading through that thread, there are a few different tips/tricks people have done to get skype working, properly.

-> Have you tried downgrading to a different version of skype? -> i think there is an older version still available in AUR and i know of a user or two this worked like a charm for.

-> have you tried using skype with a different kernel?  (ie: it could be an issue with the latest stock arch kernel)

Your problem could be casued by a variety of different things, so i would recommend trying to systematically rule out factors. ie: test your webcam (in another app), if it works, you know it isn't the problem. If you are using ALSA, try Pulseaudio and see if the problem is persistent....etc, etc.

sorry, i couldn't be of more help but hopefully this will give you some ideas (or someone else will jump in this thread who has experienced your problem).

Re: [Solved] Skype causes system crash

I know this isn't "help" just my .02 cents but I had issues with skype that I fixed by ditching skype. I use google talk. I wouldn't expect skype to get any better for linux since it's owned by MS.

Re: [Solved] Skype causes system crash

Maybe a clue: your backtrace mentions 802_11, which is the name of the wifi standard. So the problem probably comes from your wifi driver.

you would be correct. That driver has had some problems/regressions/bugs, recently. There is a big long thread about it, here;

http://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-wire … 87338.html

it's from March/April, 2012. There are also some bug reports in a few (other) places against this driver.

I did that before, but didn't find anything. However, I did it again, and actually came across a thread (unfortunately don't remember exactly where), that proposed following solution:

su -c 'echo options uvcvideo nodrop=1 >> /etc/modprobe.d/uvcvideo.conf && rmmod uvcvideo && modprobe uvcvideo'

Since then Skype doesn't crash anymore whenever I click on "Test Webcam" in the settings. I then made a ca. 20 minutes video call home, and didn't have any problems. As off now, that seemed to have fixed it!! big_smile

You're right, I'm sorry I didn't... I promise, I'll do better next time smile

Well, I'm not a particular fan of skype either and would prefer using Jabber/XMPP (call me weird, but I don't like/trust google), but many of my friends use skype a lot, and to get all of them to switch to something else would be rather difficult if not impossible...

Thanks everyone!!! I really hope that it's fixed now and doesn't crash again the next time big_smile

Thanks a lot for the solution! The freezing webcam was the only thing that spoiled my great first impression of ArchBang after migrating from Debian on my Eee PC 1005PE.
