Hi,
I am having problems with wine 1.5.3 in Arch x64. I can install games (I tried with Fallout and Rollercoaster Tycoon from GOG.com) but not run them. Also games that used to work perfectly (like Heroes of Might and Magic III) now don't run anymore.
In the case of Fallout, this is the output I get
wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0xffffffff at address 0x7d6f30d7 (thread 0009), starting debugger...
Unhandled exception: page fault on read access to 0xffffffff in 32-bit code (0x7d6f30d7).

I've browsed the forums and googled around, and the cause of the problem may be the (open source) drivers of my ATI card or mesa, although I am not sure. Can anyone help me find what's the cause of the problem, please?

Please post the complete output of wine. From the moment you hit enter after typing "wine program".

This does not help at all , what I wanted you to do was run your program from a terminal and then paste the output. Usually it will consist of wine outputting messages and will give hints regarding any missing libraries or opengl errors etc. The above output is not different from what you posted earlier.
Offline
That is the output I get from the terminal by running "wine falloutw.exe", there "falloutw.exe" is the executable of the game.
I was actually surprised when you asked to post the output, since I had already did that in the first spot. Maybe I'm misunderstanding something?
What I can add is that there is an alert dialog saying "Application error; the instruction at <memory address> referenced memory at ffffffff. TheMemory could not be read from." popping up. The <memory address> is different every time.

Hrm.. that is strange. Did you try deleting the prefix? What graphics card/drivers do you have? When did this error start occuring, was wine running fine at some point?

I haven't deleted the prefix, should I try it? How can I do it?
I have an old ATI XPRESS running on the open source ATI drivers. As for wine giving problems, that happens in the beginning: as soon as I press enter, the screen goes black and nothing happens; if I alt-tab I can close the error dialog I mentioned previously and go back to the desktop.
Just for integration, Wine's AppDB rates this version of Fallout as Platinum.
Thanks again for your help!

Do you have the 32-bit grahics drivers (lib32-ati-dri) installed?
32-bit games can't run without them, but the installers can, which fits your description.

Yes, I have installed them, version 8.0.2-1 from multilib.

Not to hijack elnigno's thread but I'm also having a similar problem. Upon running the game I am greeted with a "This game needs DirectX9 to run" error message. I was under the impression that wine included DX9 libraries?
This is running on an HP laptop with an Nvidia 8400mobile graphics card.

MorningWood, the following should solve your problem. I do not believe Wine comes with DX9. I had to run this to get multiple games working for me (Steam games, World of Warcraft, Starcraft 2)
winetricks d3dx9 corefonts vcrun6
Elnigno: Have you made sure the same issue isn't like MorningWood? I know Fallout 3 and New Vegas are both built around Directx 9, and I was getting the same thing as you with Saints Row until I installed some extras
otherwise just run wine from terminal (wine fallout.exe) and copy everything for a post. that'll give us something to work with.
(Yes, these are simple responses, but even from time to time we all forget something)

Do you have any compositors (compiz, xcompmgr, compton etc.) running? In my experience Wine really doesn't liek them. Disable the compositors when you launch the games, see if you get any better results?

Thanks for your replies, Citric and 2Karl. I have disabled compositing and installed the programs suggested by Citric, but no change. Anyway, as a side now, I am trying to run the original Fallout, not Fallout 3
This is the output I got after this last trial, no change from my first post.

However, I have noticed this line:
ELF 7cf7c000-7dfc8000 Deferred r300_dri.so
If I'm not wrong, r300_dri.so is installed with the Ati open source drivers. Could they be involved in causing the problem?

Are you using xf86-video-ati? Just wondering. I know without installing the actual nvidia drivers and removing libgl for me, a lot of things don't want to cooperate, including basically any games under wine. That's Nvidia for me though, I don't really know ATI, but isn't there some kind of driver called Catalyst?
Anyways, I googled your problem real quick just to see if I could find anything, cause I've never had wine blow up that hard in my face.
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-848858.html
Also, on AppDB
FallOut 1.x
The game won't run: segmention error.
ALSA is known to cause this, try Wine 1.0-rc1 or use OSS or Arts.

hi, you should deffinitely use Catalyst if you want to have 3D output. I have an AMD HD6950 and games in wine only work with catalyst for me. (even if it did work with the open source driver it's just not en pair with the propietary one).

Critic, thank you very much for your help. I tried your suggestion and when launching the game it still tells me that it needs DX9. The game in question is Limbo. I've checked the AppDB and it seems that it's working properly for others. Any ideas?
E: my mistake. Did not notice the Additional Comments in the AppDB
E2: still no go even after following the following note in AppDB:
To run need:
winetricks directx9
and change d3dx9_43 to "(native, builtin)" in winecfg
E3: WOOOOOOOOO got it working with some research. Turns out that lib32-libgl needed to be replaced with lib32-nvidia-utils
All is good

I am having the same problem with every game recently on the amdgpu open driver. lib32-libgl-mesa and lib32-nvidia-utils are both installed. Removing the former results in wine being removed
