Display is not set or cannot connect to the X server

Hi

I've just installed Archlinux and everything went OK. After the basic installation I also installed xorg and kde packages and run X -configure in order to get the xorg.conf file and moved it to /etc/X11/xorg.conf. I added some daemons to /etc/rc.conf:

DAEMONS=(hal fam alsa kdm)

But when I try to start kde, I got this error:

$DISPLAY is not set or cannot connect to the X server.

I'm not sure what I should try now. The "weird" thing is that if I run "startx", the x server does start (not kde but the basic x).

Thanks for your help!

Re: Display is not set or cannot connect to the X server

I just installed Arch64 a few days ago and am having the EXACT same issue. XFCE4 works and so does the basic X server. Just not KDE from repos. Might try getting kde and compiling it myself, seems like an issue with KDE off the repos maybe. If anybody could point us in the right direction that would be great. Thanks.

Re: Display is not set or cannot connect to the X server

I tried installing again (and again, and again) Arch Linux, and had the same problem. There is nothing about this on Google or Arch forums sad

Have you tried the inittab approach for starting kdm? http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Add … tab_Method

Thanks a lot arkham! That worked perfectly for me.

Re: Display is not set or cannot connect to the X server

Hi, it worked for me too!! The problem I have now is that the keyboard and mouse don't want to work at all... (I installed xf86-input-keyboard and mouse... but still the same), any idea?

Thanks!

Re: Display is not set or cannot connect to the X server

Install xf86-input-evdev and read the wiki about Xorg input hotplugging.

Re: Display is not set or cannot connect to the X server

This thread is 3 years old.  Start a new one with your problem as the information here is long since obsolete.  Some of the tools discussed here (eg hal) are no longer used.
