Cant install Archlinux with 2k12-R2 image

Hi, I have a gpt hard disk with efi boot, so I need to boot from this image, the issue is that it displays a menu, with the options, I select Archlinux, the first one, and it starts to load files and stuff, then it shut down my monitor, It looks like something is going wrong with the graphics card, I use an nvidia GFX 555, It looks like the noveau drivers hangs, Im not sure but thats how it looks like, I would like to know if theres any possibility that I install arch, like disabling the noveau drivers, dont know how, or something, so my graphics card dont hangs at starting the installation.

Thanks.

This sounds like the kind of porblem you often see on machines that :
a) use nvidia optimus technology
b) and/or have both on-board/integrated intel graphics AND a separate videocard .

What is the brand/model of your machine/motherboard ?

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

When you give the brand and model of your machine, details like which motherboard, integrated graphics (or not) etc should be findable on the manufacturers website.

I have been looking for the nvidia optimus issue, I dont have an intel card...

How can you spend $1500 on a computer and be so oblivious to the insides of it?

Congratulations on being competent enough and creating an account here, with the whole "What is the output of "date -u +%W$(uname..." thing. I imagine many people gave up on that.

Let me ask you this, tho. Why are you even interested in Arch Linux?

Thanks.

Is this a KMS issue? You can check by adding "nomodeset" to your grub line and seeing if it gets you past the point where the monitor goes blank.

Thanks for the suggestion, I have tried adding nomodeset to the kernel line in the grub boot options (pressing e) and same result, the only thing that works is ctrl+alt+del to reboot.

Thanks.

Re: Cant install Archlinux with 2k12-R2 image

More data, I have tried initiating from the LTS kernel, and the graphic card dont hangs, but the computer does, the last line is this one...

fb:Conflicting fb hw usage nouveaufb vs EFI VGA - removing generic driver

And no more processing, its the step where it detects my nvidia card and loads the nouveau driver, any idea on how to avoid this? (adding nomodeset results in same behaviour and same messages)

Thanks.

Re: Cant install Archlinux with 2k12-R2 image

This is madness, I have booted the image in legacy mode (no uefi) and it worked using the lts core, but, it doesnt installs the efi bootloader correctly, the system is installed, but my computer only starts windows in uefi mode, without uefi it simply doesnt starts, super grub2 disk doesnt boots on uefi, same rescuetux, so I dont know how to fix this, any help?.

Thanks.

Sorry, no experience with (U)EFI systems.

However, that message suggests the nouveau driver doesn't work well together with EFI on your system.

2 things you can try :

- blacklist the nouveau driver in rc.conf

- loading the nouveau driver early might also solve this, try adding it to the modules line in mkinitcpio.conf

Thanks, I found another solution, with the 2k12-r1 iso (the r2 one its impossible to boot on my system) adding the parameter uvesafb=800x600-16 worked, then I install grub2 and then the system starts at windows... I select archlinux at the efi boot setup at bios, and it starts at windows, so I dont know what to do know, and thanks for your suggestions!!!

Thanks.

Re: Cant install Archlinux with 2k12-R2 image

Another thing you could do is press tab on arch linux when the boot menu comes up and adding " modprobe.blacklist=nouveau" to the end of the kernel command line. That will stop the nouveau driver from loading at boot.

Glad you got it sorted.

Re: Cant install Archlinux with 2k12-R2 image

When you boot in efi, the boot screen is not the same, you dont press tab, its e, I tried the modprobe.blacklist command, but it didnt worked, dont ask me why, dont know, now Im looking for installing grub2 in my efi so I can boot up with windows or with archlinux, now it only boots up windows, this is my parted -l if it helps.

tZG5ibg

Its a photo because I only can use command line from the bootable usb.

Thanks.

Re: Cant install Archlinux with 2k12-R2 image

Have you had a look at the Arch Linux wiki  - https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Un … _Interface  - Reading the wiki would be the best place to start.

Re: Cant install Archlinux with 2k12-R2 image

If you are using the 2k12-R2 archboot image - note that this isn't the core installation image - the "Official" core installation image is currently at v2011.08.19 the archboot disc image is only a creation tool - you can download the official release at http://www.archlinux.org/download/ - don't get confused between the archboot and the core install disc. This might be what's causing the problem.

The official release dont boots on efi systems. Thats why I use Archboot.

Thanks.
