it is trying to install to the root file system rather than $startdir/pkg - check you make install line from the offical gaim PKGBUILD

the difference is inconsistency.  try changeing the prefix=$startdir/pkg/usr

change back to your orignal --prefix=/usr and use

make prefix=$startdir/pkg/usr install || return 1
