Hi all, first post so let me say I'm enjoying my Arch experience thus far and have managed with the wiki until now. My dialogue boxes are huge, I'm on a netbook and whenever I need to open a file or save a file the dialogue boxes open almost off screen.
Is there a setting I have missed somewhere where I can adjust the default size?
appreciate any nudge in the right direction.
Edit: should mention when I use geany text editor and do a "file open", the dialogue box opens to large for the window as well.

Thanks for the reply Trilby, I'm not sure if what your suggesting helps, my GTK theme is displaying well, it's just the size of the dialogue boxes (window) the opens too big. Not sure if I'm explaining this correctly, hope that helps.

The size of (most) dialogs is determined by the elements inside it. I've had the very same problem with I had openbox on a netbook. Adjusting the theme fixed it. There are various theme elements to tinker with, I'd suggest font and font-size first. LXAppearance makes it very easy to guess and check for a while, and convenently it is a dialog window on which you can see immediate results.

I will adjust the various font / font-size settings and report back, thanks again.

I adjusted the fonts to their smallest possible variable, and changed Geany's default "open path" to an empty folder to eliminate all elements within the dialogue box and the window size persists. I'm beginning to wonder if this may be an issue with my video settings, is it possible I need to specify my resolution somewhere or can I force the dialogue box to open to specific dimensions/location?

Perhaps your issue was different than mine. I'm not sure exactly where to go next, but more information would be good. A screenshot of an example may be helpful. Also your video card + driver. The latter can be found with `lspci | grep VGA` and `pacman -Qs xf86-video`
There are ways to specify screen resolution for X, but under most conditions (AFAIK) this should not be necessary if the proper video driver is installed.

Hmm, everything seems in order there. As an aside, you don't need all those video drivers installed, just xf86-video-intel is required in your case. But that should not be relevant to the current problem.
You could double check the output from xrandr to get your actual screen resolution, but that looks appropriate. As another aside, larger screenshots are supposed to be linked to from the forum not included - I'm not a moderator and don't know the size guidelines off the top of my head, but someone may "suggest" you move that somewhere else and just provide the link.
As to the problem at hand: I just learned something new, check out ~./config/gtk-2.0/gtkfilechooser.ini
It looks like that file may have what you need.

Trilby I believe you found it, I am reading up on gtkfilechooser and there are GEOMETRY settings which just may solve my problem, I haven't the time to test it right now but it seems like the answer to my issue, I appreciate all your help and patience, as an aside, my image is linked to imageshack I believe I respected the guidelines.
cheers mate & thank-you
