Strange graphics/text glitches

I've been having this weird problem for over a year where sometimes text (most notably in xfce terminal) will be garbled and unreadable. The problem persists until I either highlight the text or switch to another desktop and switch back. Sometimes it will come back quickly, other times it will stay fine for a while.

The problem is intermittent so I don't have a screenshot to show what is going on but I did notice a similar (likely related) problem with Google Map (or any sort of slippy map, for that matter). The following screenshot shows the problem with Google Maps.

I have intel integrated graphics; the following is what results from running lspci and grepping for VGA:

Also of possible relevance: I'm running openbox with xcompmgr. The problem persists even when I don't run xcompmgr so that doesn't seem to be the root problem.

Any help in getting started on a fix would be greatly appreciated!

It's probably driver bugginess. Does it matter whether your driver is using EXA or UXA? There are also certain hooks that can be turned off in each of them with options like EXANoComposite and UXANoComposite.

this is happening to me too, I am using kde 4.8.3 and gnoome 3.4
