nouveau VS nvidia blob about GPU temp
hi to everybody,
i want to switch from nvidia blob to open-source nouveau
but i get greater temperature of 10 celsius degrees with open-source driver
(same situation, card is 9800gt)
anyone has the same problem ?
is a consumption problem or different fan behaviour ?
+pc: custom | AMD Opteron 175 | nForce4 Ultra | 2GB ram DDR400 | nVidia 9800GT 1GB | ArchLinux x86_64 w/ openbox
+laptop: Apple | MacBook (2,1) | 2GB ram | Mac OS X 10.4 -> DIED

Yeah I have the same problem. Nouveau runs hotter. I think mine was only about 5 degrees if I remember correctly though. It was enough to make me not want to use it though.

You know, just reading a bit about nouveau would answer this question....

Read the documentation for details -- especially for nvidia proprietary driver. You can use adaptive power mode with it as well as play with clock frequencies (I don't do it for security reasons, though) which let's you alter the way nvidia's GPU works. IMO it helps to improve the performance at least a little bit. Nouveau, however, hasn't solved the power management issues in a satisfactory degree so far.
