nvidia driver problem

hi.
I began to have problem with nvidia 290.xx driver
I thought I add the bug https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/27226 but it was wrong
because X was starting but was very slow or buggy but X was able to start so

with 295.xx out, I still have the bug whereas FS#27226 is supposed to be fixed
X is very slow even unusable, and unresponsive

I have tested with gdm and gnome 3 (using fallback mode) and autologin
the problem is gdm I think show up ad yoh, there was an error and prompt me to restart the session
after that it's a nightmare nothing works. even switching to console is impossible

and fluxbox too without gdm
fluxbox works but switching back from console gives a 30s lap where nothing i useable, and there sometimes artifact or graphic bug

I see nothing in /var/log/messages.in /var/log/Xorg.log either except
[   655.276] (EE) NVIDIA(0): Error recovery failed.
[   655.276] (EE) NVIDIA(0):  *** Aborting ***
where the error is not specified
it is below an error related with acpid that I do not run. So i tried with acpid running and it makes no differences

I have a geforce 8300 GS.
anyone experiencing problem like that ?

I am back using 285.xx

Re: nvidia driver problem

are you re-configuring the xorg.conf after updating the driver, if so can you post what's in there for us to see?

Re: nvidia driver problem

You should not need an xorg.conf file anymore with the newest driver blobs. No need to run nvidia-xconfig anymore.

You could always try re-installing the kernel nvidia-blob and xorg from runlevel 3 with X killed. I know for me on earlier versions of the nvidia driver if I would not install from console with X stoped I would end up with issues.

Re: nvidia driver problem

Hi, I have the same issue https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1101048
Following your advice I tried a couple of combinations and finally made nividia-285work, sort of . The issue with blender seems to have gone, but I messed something with xorg or gnome since I'm getting an error in gdm login (i'm trying to find out the error) and the all windows decorations are gone. And had a complete crash once.

Which xorg-server version are you using? and kernel? xf86-input-evdev?

update:
this combination seems to work for me!
nvidia 285.05.09-3
linux 3.1.9-2
xorg-server 1.10.4-1
xf86-input-evdev 2.6.0-3

will keep updated...

thanks!!
