For some reason my laptop overheats quite a bit while i'm running archlinux. It becomes really hot even while i'm not doing anything.
I'm currently running arch on a dell inspiron 15, and using laptop-mode-tools for my laptop's power management. Is there any way to see what is causing my laptop to overheat and possibly fix it?

Are you using CPU Frequency Scaling? I have noticed that throttling down the CPU when possible makes a substantial difference, temperature-wise.

The wiki has extensive documentation on this. Laptop mode tools is one component, but not sufficient. Look up the laptop mode tools page in the wiki, it suggests also using acpid, cpu frequency scaling, and pm-utils. Furthermore, it can help to pass experimental flags to the kernel at boot time. The wiki mentions some in the Laptop page, others depend on your hardware.

These five things already mentioned should be plenty: laptop mode tools, cpu frequency scaling, acpid, pm-utils, and kernel flags. Investing patience and thought into a judicious set up will not only lower temperatures, but also extend battery life, so it's a double win
