Installed to GRUB? You shouldn't be installing plop anywhere, just loading the image onto the floppy disk and booting from the floppy. You should get to a screen similar to this if done correctly. You just choose USB and it should boot from the USB disk.
The USB will just be a normal LiveUSB setup with whatever distro (Arch in this case)... nothing special has to be done to it. If it's having trouble after the USB starts to boot, then that's a different issue.

yes, I managed to get to that screen by installing plop boot manager (.bin) to the D drive and using grub to start it.
But yeah it just froze all the time, I tried installing DSLinux to the flash drive using YUMI and the other USB installer

hm, haven't read all posts in detail, so forgive me...
Well, I managed some similar case (where plop didn't help) with installing the very basic system from Arch CD on another machine (also intel 32bit), 'transplanted' the harddisk into the right one, and updated all online...
Just make sure, your bootloader is configured properly.
we are Arch.
you will be assimilated!
resistance is futile!

its a desktop hard-drive with the other machine being a laptop so that wont work
By the way, I put my desktop on network boot mode, and it seems to go to grub pretty quickly is this normal or is it supposed to wait for the network a bit longer?

Put it into an external (usb) harddrive case then.

I just found this. I tried it with Crunchbang and Grub legacy and that worked. Maybe it works for Arch too?

7) You can boot from and install to the same hard drive.
Edit: Oops, I mixed up hard drive and partition... This also needs an extra partition.
