It works in KDE 4 but not in GNOME.
Not to mention how ugly user interface looks by default.

Try to remove the file $HOME/.drirc (it's an XML file which is read by the DRI module using libexpat.so) or to add a new line at the end of the file (in my case (nouveau_dri) the new line worked perfectly). Of course this is a bug in expat - it shouldn't crash in case an XML file does not end with a new line.
Hope this helps!

After installing "lib32-nvidia-utils" (lib32-libxv-1.0.6-1 lib32-libxvmc-1.0.6-3 additional dependencies), Google Earth doesn't crash anymore.
edit:
I noticed that by removing lib32-utils which are in conflict with lib32-nvidia-utils, I have problems with flashcrap (videos breaking, greyed out area where was flash video, etc.)

I was also suffering from the same issue (x86_64, xf86-video-intel), and found a fix for it (from http://dk-diary-dk.blogspot.com/2008/04 … l-11.html). It might be old/non-functioning for you but give it a try :
Get this file : http://librarian.launchpad.net/7037027/libGL.so.1 and put it in the google-earth directory /opt/google-earth.

Thx ally, the ligGL.so.1 solved my issues, though using a nvidia card . thanks again

Thanks for the tip. Adding a newline didn't work for me, but removing the file did (i686, xf86-video-intel). I finally can see where Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu is located!

Solved. The new blank line must be added to the both .drirc files (in your HOME and in /etc).

Solved for me, with radeon xf86-video-ati (r300g) but i don't have a .drirc file in /etc... Don't know what that means...
Thanks.

Installing lib32-intel-dri fixed the crashing for me on an intel card, installing lib32-$(your-video-card)-dri will likely solve this problem.

Installing lib32-intel-dri worked for me too, no flickering anymore, it was caused by the seperately downloaded libGL.so.1.
