[SOLVED] Firefox, Chrome, GIMP, veeeeeeeery slow!

Hi guys!

Since two days I cannot use Firefox, Chrome, GIMP and other applications because every time I click in any menu option, it takes ages until the program reacts. With Konqueror it does not happen.

Can you help me here, please? I just update regularly Archlinux and I didn't uninstall anything (as far as I know)

I'm using KDE as desktop.

Thanks for giving me ideas. My current Archlinux installation is 4 years old and I haven't got big problems until now. The only solution I can think of is to reinstall everything, but this would be a huge work for me!

Regards!

Have you run "top" in a terminal to see if you have a runaway process consuming RAM and CPU? If yes, what is it?

Re: [SOLVED] Firefox, Chrome, GIMP, veeeeeeeery slow!

I have just run "top", but I cannot identify any process consuming many RAM or CPU. Only cupsd ,but only 5% of CPU used...

It seems that it only happen to GTK applications. I also have the NVIDIA drivers installed and they get updated some days ago.

I'm running out of ideas...

Thanks for the support!

Start pulling packages out of your cache and downgrading the recent updates one by one to see if you can find the culprit (GTK3 was updated 2 days ago).

Also what happens if you launch them from a terminal? Any clues there?

Re: [SOLVED] Firefox, Chrome, GIMP, veeeeeeeery slow!

I have already tried to start them from a terminal, but I don't get any further information... Maybe it was the update to GTK3. How can I downgrade the packages? Where can I get the old packages (I regularly clear the cache...).

Thanks for the ideas...

The wiki has your answers here:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Do … g_Packages

If you've cleared those packages out of the cache, you'll want to look at the section on the ARM.

Maybe your Gtk theme has a lot of errors? Try using a default theme…

Re: [SOLVED] Firefox, Chrome, GIMP, veeeeeeeery slow!

It might be latest cairo and xorg-server, i downgraded them and now my desktop is quick again:
[2012-05-13 14:24] upgraded xorg-server-common (1.12.1-2 -> 1.12.1-1)
[2012-05-13 14:24] upgraded xorg-server (1.12.1-2 -> 1.12.1-2)
[2012-05-13 14:24] upgraded cairo (1.12.2-1 -> 1.10.2-3)
It might be enough to downgrade only cairo.
I am waiting for the new xorg in testing.

Re: [SOLVED] Firefox, Chrome, GIMP, veeeeeeeery slow!

Check your /etc/hosts file against "HOSTNAME" from /etc/rc.conf.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Be … tc.2Fhosts

Errors in this entry may cause poor network performance and/or certain programs to open very slowly, or not work at all. This is a very common error for beginners.

Hi to everyone,

I just downgraded cairo and xorg as you suggested but it doesn't seem to be the solution. When I click on a menu option in Firefox, for instance, it takes ages until it reacts and shows me the options (For instance, I click on "Tools" and it takes more than 2 minutes until it shows me the following menu).

The same applies to Gimp, Chrome but not to programs built with Qt like konqueror...

Thanks for the help, Any further ideas?

Re: [SOLVED] Firefox, Chrome, GIMP, veeeeeeeery slow!

I had this issue and for me the cause was pulseaudio.

An upgrade of the pulseaudio package changed some things in /etc/pulse/default.pa but the changes got written to .pacnew since I had changed some things there myself. Because of this, pulseaudio wouldn't start anymore.

When I applied the changes to /etc/pulse/default.pa and started pulseaudio, everything went back to normal for me.

Can you please tell me exactly what you did? Did you overwrite /etc/pulse/default.pa with the .pacnew file?

I just overwrote the default.pa with default.pa.pacnew, started pulseaudio with pulseaudio --start and now all the menus are working again!!!!

Thanks zoop!!!!

Thanks to you all!!!
