Been experiencing lockups the past few days. Seems to have started around the update to kernel 3.3. I've been trying to isolate what's causing it the past few days (since there really is no other good way) and have discovered it always happens during a skype call. Haven't had any lockups without skype open. Disabled apparmor (which I use with skype) just to make sure that wasn't causing any issues, still locks up with skype.
These lockups are complete lockups. I cannot get any response. I've tried SSHing in and enabling magic sysrq keys. No response.
Here's an example from messages.log during a lockup:
Apr 12 21:04:20 localhost kernel: [10659.514801] type=1400 audit(1334279060.030:263024): apparmor="ALLOWED" operation="file_mprotect" parent=16013 profile="/usr/lib/chromium/chromium-sandbox" name="/usr/lib/chromium/chromium-sandbox" pid=16264 comm="chromium-sandbo" requested_mask="Apr 12 21:09:03 localhost kernel: [ 0.000000] Initializing cgroup subsys cpuset
Apr 12 21:09:03 localhost kernel: [ 0.000000] Initializing cgroup subsys cpu
As you can see there, it stopped writing to the log mid-line.
I've gone ahead and downgraded to kernel 3.2.14 after the lastest lockup just now to make sure it is kernel 3.3/skype that is the problem. I'll comment back in a few days on this.
Anyone else experiencing anything similiar?

A call with video? Maybe a problem with the webcam.

Yes I was just thinking that a minute ago. As far as I can remember, it's only happened with my webcam on (don't have it on all the time while using skype). Could possibly be a webcam issue, but it's hard to debug with no logs to check. I'll try out other webcam apps to test.

If you are running nvidia it is probably 295.40 which is the bad apple, people are downgrading to 295.33 or https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=139276.

I'm running an ATI 5670 with fglrx.
Tried again with kernel 3.3.1 and it froze with Cheese open after about 20 minutes, so this seems to be a webcam problem instead of an issue with Skype. The kernel in testing 3.3.2 also locks up, so I'll just stay on 3.2.14 for now.

having webcam problem too. Mine is a HP Webcam (/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.7/usb2/2-5/2-5:1.0/input/input9),
Skype video calls and V4L2 test Utility both just freeze up my laptop.
running 3.3.1-1-ARCH

Same problem over here. Skype as well as Google Talk locks up the system entirely. I have a Philips webcam (not so great) but started noticing it after the Kernel 3.3 update). Right now on 3.3.2-1-ARCH.

I found a workaround https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=808188
I'll probably try this after going back home.
$ sudo -c 'echo options uvcvideo nodrop=1 >> /etc/modprobe.d/uvcvideo.conf &&
rmmod uvcvideo && modprobe uvcvideo'

I observed the same behaviour on my laptop. But yesterday everything was working fine with Kernel 3.3.6 during a longer video call.

Still have same problem with Kernel 3.3.7.
Workaround noted by Dead Code above works like a charm.

Just to let you know, the bug you have been experiencing is likely https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/31074 which was fixed since linux 3.5.4-1.
