Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello everybody! I've just installed Arch Linux and I'm having some trouble with wireless now, but I think I almost got it fixed! I choose Arch Linux because I like that you can choose what to install yourself and because I didn't want to use windows anymore.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hey folks,

I have bounced around distros for the last 11 years or so, and now I am trying out Arch for the first time.  I really like the Arch philosophy, and I am impressed with the documentation.  I am still very much learning the Arch-fu, so I thought I'd register here to bounce ideas off the grizzled vets when I am stumped.

Cheers,

Tso

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

HI Guys,

Just finished installing Arch. Coming from Windows Vista then Ubuntu and of all those, this installation has taught me quite a lot about the inner workings of operating systems. The learning curve is kinda steep but I have now got the hang of it. I had issues configuring the internet access since I was tethering from my android cellphone but after that it has been smooth sailing smile I am loving every bit of it.

Cheers

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Well, hello,

I stared using arch, coming from two years of Debian stable after a short period of Ubuntu and not liking its philosophy. Before that it was Windows. I was getting more and more annoyed with the stability of Debian stable, decided to start using testing, started looking around to maybe try another distro and found Arch with its rolling release schedule. The Arch way really spoke to me and I decided to try it on my desktop.
This was about three months ago and I never looked back. The install wasn't at all as hard as various articles had told me it would be (well, with the Beginner's Guide handy of course) and neither is the rest of it. If anything, Arch's simplicity, openness, 'honesty' (and great documentation) make things easier (partly because it also stimulates to learn).
A few weeks ago my laptop, which I use for uni work pretty much exclusively, running Debian stable broke (physically) and I had to buy a new one. Installed Arch on that too, which was a breeze as well, even easier after my first experience. I heard a lot about possible stability problems inherent in the bleeding edge rolling repos which made me hesitate installing Arch on my uni laptop, but so far nothing has broken down on me, everything is working great and if something does break down, I'll just install a temporary distro alongside to continue being productive on it until I find time to fix it (which, given the great documentation and community here I don't expect to take long).
I love Arch, it gives me the same feeling I had after I just switched from Windows to Linux.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hell, I guess i might as well write a post.

I started using linux with RH 7.3 WAY BACK. Have been on and off ever since, mostly with Xubuntu.

Most of the time I run Openbox, and like a fairly minimal system. My defualt install has been xubuntu mainly for the easy wireless and x configs.

Recently I started working with Arch in a Virtual box and now I will be an Arch user on a Raspberry Pi.

Thanks for the great wiki!

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello everyone. I'm an Australian English teacher in Japan.

I started using Linux intermittently about 11 years ago and been relying on it more and more for the last couple of years. Mostly I was messing around with various *ubuntu flavours, switched to #! last week which I was loving and then decided to give Arch a spin before I had put too much time into my #! set up.

I finally got my Arch install working today. I installed from scratch 4 times and got tripped up each time after rebooting. I'd get stuck at the SLiM login area and be unable to get out with anything other than a hard reset. Eventually I got the hint, switched to LXDM and it's been great so far.

Now I've got pacaur up and running and so I'm going to see how much damage I can do and then fix without running back to the forums asking for help. ;-)

It is probably moot, but you could have either pressed CTRL-ALT-F2 to bring up a console on TTY2, or, depending on how you start Slim, added something to the kernel command line in grub (tell it to start runlevel 3 rather than 5)

Anyway, welcome to Arch

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello everyone,

Installed Arch a few weeks back now and thought it time to say hi.

Been using Linux on and off (more off due to my job needing windows) now since around 1992/3 but been using it solidly everyday now for the last 8/9 months. Tried a few different distros over that time and decided I wanted to give a rolling release a go so ended up installing Arch and have been so impressed so far, it does everything I want and more. I had installed KDE during the install but have ended up using XFCE with some Gnome apps where needed, can't tell you how much I like XFCE.

Anyway I think my distro hopping days are over and I have no intention of moving smile

I think the wiki is a great resource, pacman has been so easy to use and the forums have been a godsend. I have found everything I have needed in the packages and aur.

Thanks for making it a great experience.

Andrew.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello All;
been doin the distro dance for awhile now, it is almost as though i were a drug addict seeking the best high A.K.A distro.

tried all the major flavors a lot of them are not all that or my machine is not the best for those flavors, some are just too labor intensive and easy to break.

Arch, with KDE, seem to be the best fit for me, so hello. hope i can break the "need a new distro", jones.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Good day everyone!

I'm here after many years of Windows for personal use but also - and inevitably - much commercial use too, then some   years of Ubuntu - Dapper - then Fedora - and nothing wrong there either. I finally decided to go that little extra distance and try Arch, which I have been using now for a month or so. I have found the transition interesting, but relatively pain free. The focus and quality of the Arch community, and the x-referenced documentation is staggeringly good, and if I had to pick one thing which sets it way above in my opinion, it is that support.

The price - there always is a price - is that this focus and the Arch philosophy excludes those who neither enjoy nor wish for exposure to anything slightly technical, and their input and experiences can be valuable sometimes as well. For myself I'm happy, and Arch will do just fine.

Greetings from here in la Savoie!

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Having tried a lot of linuxflavours earlier, from Slackware 7.1 on my first laptop (IBM ThinkPad 380E), to RedHat, Debian, Fedora, and a loot of other stuff, I'm now at Arch. The look, feel, and the pure awesomeness in the files, the AUR and yeah, pretty mutch everything is good. I love it smile

Edit: Added modelname for my first laptop.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi everyone! I've been using Arch for quite a while now (a whopping 5 months >>) and only now do I realize that I could be using these forums more.
I'm 17 years old (so be patient lol) and this is not my first Linux encounter. I started way back when I was really young, starting with Linspire (some of y'all might be saying, "She's HOW OLD again?"). After, I updated the computer to Ubuntu (Hardy->Intrepid->Jaunty) then I built my own computer, and put Jaunty on it. I tried the new Karmic, but it was too much like Windows, so I downgraded back to Jaunty and dual-booted Windows. I had that up and running, then I started messing up my ubuntu partition and stuff like that, so I was on windows for the longest time. Then I found Arch Linux, and I heard it was tres cool for customizing, cos I'm into that stuff, so I got it, and now I realize how sobering computers can be. Still, I love every problem because I only have to solve it once for the first time, so I'm looking forward to learning all sorts of Linux.
So, I'm looking forward to talking and working with y'all in the future, and I hope you feel the same too!

Specs: Intel DX58SO || Intel Core i7 920 @ 2.67 GHz x8 w/ Corsair LCS || 3x2 GB DDR3 RAM || ATi Radeon HD 3870 || Hitachi Deskstar (1 TB) || Arch Linux x64
I figure that's what you'll need to see each time, cos I know people ask for specs all the time.

Hey, We've had a TU who was younger than you ( I miss Brad).
I wrote my first program when I was your age -- thirty four years ago (Gads...)

Now, get off my lawn...   (And welcome to Arch)

Hello  everyone.

I'm Daniel, I chose arch because I like its simplicity and I think I will learn a lot more about linux from using arch than I would from some of the friendlier distros. I've been playing with linux off and on for a few years now, but I'm recently I'm trying to get more serious with it. So here we go...

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi all,

I have been using Ubuntu for a while, and have recently decided I wanted to trade convenience for control/system awareness. This led me to Arch. Over the last couple of days I have installed Arch to the point of running xfce, access to other computers on my local network, and at least minimal sound.

The process was not error-free, but your (our) great wiki was a big help. I wanted to retain access to my existing OS'es, which were XP (solely to run CutList Plus) and Ubuntu 12.04 (my normal OS; to have as a fall-back). I re-partitioned from 4 primary partitions (xp, swap, /, /home) to a setup with extended/logical partitions: xp, swap, / Ubuntu, / Arch, / future, /home. My install of Arch base left me with a Grub menu of xp and Arch. I went back to my Ubuntu 12.04 LiveCD, re-installed 12.04, and it gave me a Grub that detected all 3 OS'es. I then went to work on expanding Arch from the base install.

The only hiccup I have had was with sound. It didn't work at first - no output from "aplay Front_Center.wav". My hardware setup uses a fiber optic connection to my receiver, and I had to do something in relation to that. It may have been un-muting IEC??? in alsamixer. (I'm sorry, I wish I had kept notes on what I did). I still don't have multi-channel sound; all of the sound test files come from my center speaker.

Installing X and xfce happened without incident. I'm very impressed so far with Arch and the support resources.

Hi all!

I've been an Ubuntu user, but I wanted to switch to a "harder" distro, to learn more about linux. After reading about distros which fall into this category, Arch was the one which I liked the most.

Harder?  Arch isn't hard.  Really.

If you want hard, try Gentoo or LFS  wink

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello my fellow Archers! I'm a student who loves open-source and I admire Linux. I am a developer in C/C++ and I also do some web development occassionally. I have been using Arch for about 4 months now. It is by far THE BEST Linux distro I have ever used till date. Arch Linux has taught me a lot, more than I had ever known about Linux itself. Long live Arch! smile

Cheers.
