Is there a way to enable the bottom panel / tasklist (or is it called the message tray?) in Gnome 3? After searching online, I can find vague references to using either gconf-editor or the dconf-editor. In dconf, one link I found says that all settings regarding the panels are under /org/gnome/gnome-panel; however, I cannot find any relevant settings to change there. The pseudo-invisible notifcations bar does appear, but it doesn't contain a task list and I can't right click on it or the top panel to change any of those settings.

There is no tasklist in GNOME Shell; the "Activities" view has replaced it. If you want something similar to the GNOME 2 desktop layout, you can force "fallback" mode as described in the wiki.

It's not a perfect solution, but I installed the tint2 package. Running gnome-session-properties and adding /usr/bin/tint2 as a startup application replicates the behaviour I was looking for. I updated the wiki page to include a little information on this configuration, too. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Tint2#Gnome_3
