[QUESTION] ALSA Line-in audio routed out to speakers

I had this working in windows and ubuntu a while back, so I know the hardware supports it.

I have my xbox plugged into the line-in audio on my pc, I want the sound routed out my speakers so I can play games using the computer's set-up.

I have ALSA, I unmuted the line-in and cranked it up (alsamixer), no luck. I'm not really sure what else to do. I have openbox as my WM, ubuntu had this setting in gnome that routed line-in to your speakers, but I don't know of the command line way to do that.

This depends on the audio adapter you are using but in general the more recent onboard sound cards (e.g. Intel HDA) feature multi-use audio jacks. This means that your "line-in" might be used for 7.1 sound output as well depending on your configuration. For my mobo there is a checkbox to select whether Line In on the back panel is active or not. Check your sound card switches in the alsa mixer.

i have been to this website in my searches. i have a 'capture' control for line-in but i don't want to capture (i dont think) i want to loopback input to output not output to input.

thanks for the response.

i don't know what you mean by checkbox, but there is no option in my alsamixer if that's what you mean. i can select an "input source" which has the options line-in, mic, front mic, CD, stereo mixer.

OK, ummm... i suppose this is solved

if i turn smart 5.1 on and set the input device to stereo mixer.... then (here's the weird part) pull the front audio cable out *just* barely. sound comes out of the subwoofer and both front speakers (which they should since input is red/white cables muxed to line-in)

if i play something on my computer, audio will come out of all speakers except for the ones that are slightly out of the connection. if i push the connection back in, they play the PC audio again.

it's a little annoying to have to pull the cable out just the perfect amount before playing, but I can live it with.

any ideas why this is happening?

Is the front out used for something else in one of the (presumably several) possible speaker configurations?

Often the channels in alsamixer etc. are not exactly what you expect them to be due to model/vendor variations of the chipset/implementation...
Also come across many cards needing the 'capture' control to be on to play from line in/mic jacks.

I assume you have visited the alsa-project page for your chipset?

I once ran into a (probably broken) motherboard where no messing with mixers in windows XP could produce sound on any jack, yet somehow with alsa the front channel was routed to the mic/rear port :-)
I called it a GNU/Linux only box and all was well.

i don't think it's used for something else. you may be right about the smart 5.1, although i'm not sure how smart it is .

at least it's [sort of] working now. im alright with it.

execute alsamixer and select a device directly, instead of pulse.... unmute the line and chose your favourite volume
