Cooler stopped working after update

Hi. I recently did a yaourt -Syu --aur after a three weeks of non-updating (I was on vacation) and now my cpu fan seems to stop working. I'd really like to fix it since I already had some critical shutdowns on my machine.

[cra@pintsize 12:49:39 ~]
 $ sensors
acpitz-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1:        +57.0°C  (crit = +96.0°C)
temp2:        +60.0°C  (crit = +113.0°C)

coretemp-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
Core 0:       +55.0°C  (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 1:       +58.0°C  (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)

Is there any way to force fan to start explicitly?

Not sure if that's applicable, but here's lspci output:

Re: Cooler stopped working after update

Wow. That's strange. I just opened the case of my laptop and put it vertically.. And fan started to work..

So now my question is how can I measure the spinning speed of my fan? Pwmconfig seems to unable to help

[cra@pintsize 13:21:49 ~]
 $ sudo pwmconfig
# pwmconfig revision 5857 (2010-08-22)
This program will search your sensors for pulse width modulation (pwm)
controls, and test each one to see if it controls a fan on
your motherboard. Note that many motherboards do not have pwm
circuitry installed, even if your sensor chip supports pwm.

We will attempt to briefly stop each fan using the pwm controls.
The program will attempt to restore each fan to full speed
after testing. However, it is ** very important ** that you
physically verify that the fans have been to full speed
after the program has completed.

/usr/sbin/pwmconfig: There are no pwm-capable sensor modules installed

Also:

[root@pintsize cra]# echo "255" > /sys/class/hwmon/hwmon0/device/pwm1
bash: /sys/class/hwmon/hwmon0/device/pwm1: No such file or directory

Re: Cooler stopped working after update

It looks like that you can not control your fans through software. I, for example, have 3 years old ASUS k50ij and can't control nor view fan speed. I would advise you to open the laptop and clean it in case dust has accumulated on your fan. In your case i think that you have some hardware problems with fan because as you said it started to work once you turn your laptop vertically.

Re: Cooler stopped working after update

Well.. I think BIOS update helped to solve the issue actually, not the repositioning of the laptop. Now it works in horizontal position, I think. But now it's fucking soo high pitched.. Almost a mosquitto.

I'll keep the topic unSOLVED for a while just to be sure that it works and if anyone come up with some ideas.

Can you control fan speed thorugh BIOS?
