My mom has an AM2 setup (some Sempron thingy, budget config) and Geforce 6150 onboard video.
I upgraded this system today and noticed the screen went all black after KMS kicked in. The screen's little green LED would flash, turn off, turn orange, and turn on again. Boot seemed to continue (I could hear the hard drive rattle) but the screen stayed black. I could still SSH in, and X was running like nothing had happened (there was an X process active).
Disabling KMS meant I could boot to a prompt, but not into X anymore. I tried the linux-lts kernel and this works fine, so the problem lies with the newer 3.2/3.3 kernels. Since I do not upgrade this box every week, I cannot say where the regression was introduced (I upgraded the box directly from 3.2.1 to 3.3.3).
Package info:
* libdrm 2.4.25-1
* linux 3.3.3-1
* nouveau-dri 8.0.2-1
* xf86-video-nouveau 0.0.16_git20120210-1
Not sure if this is relevant info, I can provide a log of all packages upgraded today as well if necessary.

I'm having the exact same problem, unfortunately haven't found a workaround yet.

I can also confirm this issue on a GeForce 7200. When KMS kicks in, the screen goes
blank. I've tried the following recent kernels:
3.3.4-2
3.3.5-1
3.3.6-1
Same result. If I downgrade to 3.2.9, the issue is not present. The machine is not hard
locked; bootup completes and I can ctrl-alt-del to restart. I'm running with "nomodeset"
right now; otherwise, I can't work. Can't comment on X - not installed here.

There is a workaround here: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=42869. But it works partially for me. Screen resolution and frequency are not detected correctly.

Hi,
Have a look at my issue : https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=141345.
It sounds similar.
Try linux kernel 3.4.
I hope this help.
Regards
