I've had CUPS installed and working for the past few weeks (since I installed Arch). I just finished typing a report for school tonight and went to print it. About half way through, my computer crashed. This has been happening since I installed Arch. Anyway, I rebooted and sent the job through the console (lpr file.abw). It started printing and again froze half way through. I then turned the computer off and opened up the case to see if there were any loose IDE cables, or something. There weren't, but I stuck a new one in anyway. I booted back up, and now the CUPS daemon won't start. It failed at boot, so I tried /etc/rc.d/cups start, and it fails. What could be wrong?

do you receive some error when start the daemon ?
do you check the /var/log/message ?
do you check the /var/log/cups/ directory ?
do you raise the cups log level and see the logs ?
do you try with a yogourt ?

look at this:
I [02/Dec/2003:19:40:54 -0500] Started filter /usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip (PID 426) for job 1.
I [02/Dec/2003:19:40:54 -0500] Started backend /usr/lib/cups/backend/usb (PID 427) for job 1.
E [02/Dec/2003:19:40:55 -0500] PID 426 stopped with status 1!
I [02/Dec/2003:19:40:55 -0500] Hint: Try setting the LogLevel to "debug" to find out more.
the line that begin with a "E" is a crash, and show the PID 426 that is foomatic-rip (first line). Later in the log are the same sequences, with distints PIDS offcourse.
I you get the same error, try to set LogLevel to debug and see why foomatic is crashing.....

Well I've been trying to make it crash by printing more stuff, but it's working now... One thing I did differently is that I kept the application (abiword) open while printing whereas before I exited out. I highly doubt that has anything to do with it though... I also thought it could have been my RAM, but over 300MB (out of 512) are not being used, so I doubt that has to do with it... I'll set the log level to debug, just in case it happens again (I doubt it'll stay stable). Could this have anything to do with tmpfs? The only two distros that have had this type of problem on my computer (and I've tried a lot, it's what I do... I really need a life ) are CRUX and Arch. The only two similarities I could find in these that the other distros didn't have was tmpfs... could it be the problem?
