Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I see "xorg-server-1.11.4-2". I assume that's with the recompiled udev Vi0L0 was talking about?

Yes, i've just recompiled and uploaded xorg-server packages compiled against systemd-tools package (which provides udev atm)

Now fightining with kernel 3.4
EDIT2: Ok, got fglrx working on 3.4 kernel from [testing] and with catalyst 12.6 b, but 12.4 should also work.
Now i need to script this dirty dirty patches and soon you shall see it
Oh, i was basing on this w41ter post: http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/g … ser/251951

EDIT:

yes, support for this gfx will also be dropped

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

@Vi0l0: could you please keep 12.4 in the catalyst repo (maybe renaming it as catalyst-old or something like that) for those unfortunate souls who owns a pre-5000 vga? It would be nice to provide some rebuild if AMD from time to time provides sporadic updates to work with new kernel/xorg...
Anyway I'm looking forward for a proper PowerPlay implementation in open driver so that I can drop Catalyst.

I'm looking to dump ATI and get a previous gen NV card - I'm not sure I want to do business with a company that ceases support for products that are still on retailers shelves.

The catalyst test driver seems to be performing very well with gnome 3 and my 6620g without export CLUTTER_VBLANK=none smile very happy so far.

So you want to give money to a company that does absolutely nothing for helping open source graphics drivers instead of the company who has permanently employed people working on the open source graphics stack (which will support your radeon hd 4xxx just fine)?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Let's do the comparison between supported and a token gesture to open source shall we:

Between 1/2 and 1/10th performance
Missing basic OpenGL functionality
OpenCL non starter

Don't confuse token gesture with supported, and when I ask for support I only do so in as much as with hardware currently available to buy new from retailers, which includes ALL of the current newly abandoned cards.

EDIT: of course, if they were truly supporting the OS community they could just open source their drivers, period.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

linux 3.4 support for catalyst 12.4
I've added linux 3.4 support into catalyst-generator 12.4-2 package @ AUR.

Like i said it's basing on w41ter's patches from gentoo forums. This rly is a dirty solution but since we have no other...

Working fine here on x86_64 and with kernel from [testing]
Tests are welcome

Had to roll back to org-server(-common)-1.11.4-1 from yesterday's update as x wouldn't start.

Thoughts?

That's because that new xorg-1.11.4-2 is compiled against the new udev that's currently in [testing]

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I'd like to beg for some help.
I've got a laptop with Intel HD3000 and  Radeon HD 6490M. I could use xf86-video-intel with xf86-video-ati,, however I couldn't find a way to switch to the dGPU.

Now I tried catalyst-total from AUR but X won't start (no screens found) and I can't install driver for intel. If someone would be so kind to point out what I'm missing would be appreciated.

12.6 beta working good here!

kernel: 3.3.7-ck
xorg: 1.12
card: 6950 shader unlocked

They have even fixed some long standing game bugs (Majesty 2, DA2)...

Thanks Vi0L0!

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

So what do you recommend?

Currently, 12.4 works good but I don't like holding back Xorg packages so the temptation to try 12.6 and upgrade to 1.12 is big. However, as things currently are not broken, I am also a little hesitant because I would like to keep things working big_smile

Tips? Insights?

Older AMD hardware is fully supported, 2D and 3D, in xf86-video-ati.  The open-source developers aren't magicians.  They need time to work on everything.

For AMD open-sourcing their fglrx driver?  It contains too many patents and licensed code which are legal-time-bombs for them if they did so.  They're doing quite a bit already providing hardware documentation to open driver development.  Of course it's not perfect.  But, that doesn't mean that nVidia is suddenly superior to AMD.  nVidia doesn't provide any documentation - nouveau is actively discouraged by them: they recommend using the VESA driver just to get to the point where you can install their proprietary driver.

Intel is my first choice for Linux graphics hardware, followed by AMD, and then trailing, nVidia.

Running right now with a AMD Radeon 6870 1GB and xf86-video-ati.  Xfce 4.10, Compiz desktop.  It works fine.  Of course I don't use it for gaming.  For that I reboot into Windows and use Catalyst.  (Or use my Xbox 360, but hey..) wink

I'm using your latest 12.4 with kernel 3.4. The only issue I've had is that the suspend isn't working.
Another issue is that the /sys/class/backlight folder is empty, so I can't control my screen brightness, but I think that this is kernel related...
Have you tried hacking the latest 12.6 beta? We could have 3.4 kernel and Xorg 1.12...would be great!
Many thanks for your work!

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hmm... it seems to work fine although when playing a video in Mplayer, I get (black) flashes at random. Other than that everything works I think, can't be 100% sure since I've only been running it for 5 minutes

Nope, I'm using mplayer-vaapi with xvba-video backend. I don't want to look into it at the moment so I just downgraded everything again. 12.4 is working fine for me with the packages from [xorg111]
