System freezing

Hi all.

I would first like to say thank you in advance to anyone who takes the time to look at this.

I am new to archlinux and semi new to linux in general.  I have installed arch on my desktop and it runs fine for what seems like a random amount of time.  Xfce just freezes and I can not do anything to make the system responsive.  control-alt-backspace,  SysRq keys, virtual console switching, etc.  Nothing seems to work.  I can not even SSH into the box from another machine once it has locked up.

Any help anyone can give me would be greatly greatly appreciated.

I have attached some of my logs below along with lsmod, lspci dmesg output in case that helps.

EDIT:

I have edited my post and put my output between code tags.  Sorry about that.  New to the forums and I was not sure what the proper etiquette was.  Posting my logs and command output as raw text felt wrong but I was not sure what the alternative was.  I see now that with a bit of research I should have been able to find the correct way to post that stuff.  I apologise for littering up the forum.

Re: System freezing

My usual procedure if I am facing freezes is:
- Is there a pattern, e.g. always happens with particular applications running?
- How is the temperature, is it getting too high?
- Is the RAM the reason? I run several iterations of memtest to verify this.

Re: System freezing

My thought process was followed similar lines.

I have kept track of what has been going when freezes occur and there does not seem to be any pattern to running programs at the time of the crashes.

I have let memtest (from the arch installation cd) run for over 10 hours and it does not detect any memory problems.

I have considered hard drive problems as well.  I ran Steve Gibson's SpinRite software on the hard disk on every level it has including dynastat.  SpinRite can not detect a single problem with the surface of the disk or the way data is read from it.

As far as temp goes it does not feel overly hot when the system freezes but I suppose that it is possible.  I am not sure how to set up monitoring for that.  I guess I could find some kind of gui or command line tool that runs in a loop and outputs temp info to a file that I could review after a crash.  I'll try that but my gut says that it is going to be something else.

There are seg faults and other messages in the logs and command output that I have attached above that look suspicious to me but unfortunately I don't know enough to make use of them.  Google does not seem to be shedding any light on the situation for me either.  Is there anything in there that should be sticking out at me?

Thanks for taking the time to read my post and for replying.  Also, thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to post a follow up.  I appreciate the help.

Re: System freezing

I don't know if I can be much help, but one thought: considering all those seg faults are from the emerald theme, have you tried changing themes to something else?

As odd as it is, I *vaguely* remember another thread reporting freezing due to some theme.  This should be a pretty easy idea to test.  At the same time, you may want to disable as many 'features' like compositing or related bells and whistles, then add them back one at a time if there is no freeze for a while.

I can disable emerald and turn off compositing and all of the other fancy compiz features but I don't think that is it.  At least not entirely.  These freezes started before I installed compiz or enabled the emerald theme manager.  I will disable both if for no other reason than to rule them out completely.

Thanks for your reply.

Re: System freezing

Doesn't look like disabling emerald / compiz resolves my issue with my system freezing up.  Is there something in the logs or dmesg / lspci / lsmod output (above) that should be pointing me somewhere else?  Thanks in advance!

Re: System freezing

Try running linux-lts and see if it still occurs with another kernel.

Re: System freezing

I *think* this is the same bug I am facing, though I do not run anything "special" like compiz or emerald. So consider this additional information.

Env:
gnome3 in fallback mode, nvidia gtx460 with binary blob.

CrashPattern:
Nothing suspicious in any logs, happens usually with chromium/firefox playing html5 videos (youtube/G+)

Suspicion:
nvidia binary driver, I recently replaced my whole system (also vendor change) _except_ the GPU.

Re: System freezing

OK, so...  I have installed linux-lts (thanks Pres) and I am now standing by and waiting for the next freeze (or *fingers crossed* lack there of).  I'll post my results when a crash occurs or when I am confident that the alternate kernel did the trick.

Re: System freezing

Stuff I tested today:

Live Medium:
* Ubuntu 12.04 gnome live with nouveau, kernel 3.1.x- freeze
* Fedora 17 release live with nouveau, kernel 3.1.x - freeze
* OpenSUSE preview, kernel 3.4.0 - freeze

And I seem to get a pattern of the freeze appearences. I usually can work without browser, video and music for hours, not a single crash for 5hours today. But as soon as I start mplayer or play youtube videos, it goes all wacky and I get a crash frequency of
~5/h which is totally unbearable.

Is there a pre-built kernel around which has "dump trace on soft lockup" and "dump trace on hard lockup" enabled?
