Re: Can't install grub on Hardware RAID

/dev/cciss/c0d0 suggest you are using software raid, not hardware raid.
(almost all raid controllers integrated on motherboard are software raid).

Unfortunately grub legacy doesn't support software raid, either put a separate boot partition on a non-raid drive or try grub2.

Note: another user installed on sw raid and uses sometihng called 'EasyBCD 2 beta' from Windows to boot

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Re: Can't install grub on Hardware RAID

Actually I am using hardware RAID since I'm using a Compaq SmartArray i6 in a HP ProLiant DL380 Server, but I did get it installed, i had to manually install grub in the cli and i used (hd0,1) as the root device, thanks for the help tho, it's always appreciated.

I am having the same problem installing on a DL360.  Could you please explain your solution?  Did you finish the installation and just let the GRUB install fail, and then install GRUB? How?

Re: Can't install grub on Hardware RAID

I exited the installation and installed GRUB2 manually following the instructions in the wiki.  I typed each command exactly as it is written in the wiki with the exception of the final one:

# grub-install --directory=/usr/lib/grub/i386-pc --target=i386-pc --boot-directory=/boot --recheck --debug /dev/sda

I changed "/dev/sda" to /dev/cciss/c0d0.  The installation was successful with no errors. Now, I have restarted. GRUB2 started fine but when I try to start Arch I get "error: no such device:..." and "error: no such partition."

sad

Re: Can't install grub on Hardware RAID

Don't necrobump old threads.

As for the issue at hand; your grub is getting detected/loaded correctly but then is unable to find your root partition by the sound of it. Make sure you have the necessary support for the raid array in your initramfs. If all else fails, consider opening a thread of your own (including as much detailed info about the issue as possible).

Re: Can't install grub on Hardware RAID

I don't have a new problem.  I don't need a new solution.  I simply thought that a more detailed explanation in this thread would not only help me, but would make this thread more useful for the next person.  Apparently, the installation media has a problem with my RAID controller.  In my mind, that means that anyone who tries to install Arch on an HP server is going to run into this problem.  There are a lot of HP servers in the world.  When I searched for my server in the forum, I only got 3 hits.  That means anyone who has this problem will probably read this thread (1,278 views so far).  I was trying to help the next person. One definitive thread that clearly lays out a solution in the simplest possible terms seems much more likely to be helpful then a whole bunch of threads talking about the same thing.

But ok, I'll start another. Sorry.

All right then. Closing this thread and waiting for your new one, Robert Finley.
You may want to link back here, however.
