[FIXED] Separate /usr and trying systemd

init=/bin/systemd 

appended to kernel-line in /boot/grub/menu.lst will always fail
I get partway into booting when it drops to a recovery shell:

ERROR: Root device mounted successfully, but /bin/systemd does not exist

Of course, booting normally works and I can navigate to /usr/bin where indeed systemd does exist. From the recovery shell it is missing in /usr/bin, but a symlink does exist in /new_root/bin.
udev/systemd-tools 184-2, mkinitcpio 0.9.0-2, custom kernel 3.3.4 or linux-3.3.7-1, initscripts-systemd 20120412-1, systemd 184-2, systemd-arch-units 20120528-3
And yes, I rebuilt initramfs twice with these versions.  I just want to try out systemd as stated in the wiki here
Ideas as to what I'm missing?

Perhaps the arch news item concerns separate /usr partition with systemd?

Oh boo. This really is a bug. Early init needs to run the late hooks prior to checking for init existing. Apologies for being dense on the wiki thread.

I had the same problemo, so backing off the kernel commandline for now.

Right. Nothing changes in early init land if you don't recreate the initramfs.

Good to know I wasn't crazy.  I like to think I have some idea as to what's going on, but I'll admit I'm an expert in no particular area.

Huzzah!  Success with mkinitcpio-0.9.2-1 as pulled from 'testing' repo.  It's pretty obvious when it works, looking drastically different than the bootup sequence we're used to.

Systemd not automatically starting xdm.

That is beyond the scope of this thread. 
Systemd support has been made more readily available to those who want to try or convert.   It still requires some configuration, however.  'Out of the box' I still have to manually start kdm.
The original issue is now resolved and I consider this thread closed.

Feel free to start a new thread and/or go over the information that already exists in the wiki.
