[ Solved ] 1Tb raid 1 Partition help

Hi Guys,
             I am setting up my 3Ghz dual core intel with 2Gb ram and 2 x 1Tb sata drives using hardware raid 1.
Its going to be on 24 /7 as im setting it up as a web / mail / file server and its going to double as my desktop until i purchase another pc.
I want to use ext4 but i would like advice on what size partitions you would advise on etc please.

Any particular reason for "hardware" raid ? any good raid controller (aka. ultra expensive one) ? if no - use real software raid instead .

No i'm just using the onboard hardware raid controller . I'd just like an idea of sugested partion layout sizes for the 1Tb array , as this is going to be a server / desktop.

Is it a desktop first and sever second? Or a SERVER first and a desktop second? Either way you can probably use VirtualBox. Maybe even with the setup you currently have, or from Windows.

Server first then desktop but i dont want to use virtualbox i just would like advice on the partion setup /sizes .

the partition sizes depend on how big the data you need to store is.
The web mail and fileserver functions will likely have the biggest amount of data, but how much do you need ?

The simplest solution will likely be an LVM setup so you can change volume sizes afterwards.

All i'm after is what partitions would you have for this setup if i was not going to use lvm ?
i.e. / root /var /boot /home

Is this ok ?

swap = 4Gb -- Based on 2Gb ram ??
/boot = 250Mb -- ext2
/var = 50Gb -- ext4
/ = 200Gb -- ext4
/home = The rest ?? -- ext4

Total drive size 1Tb

Any comments welcome.

Personally i'd put the folder where the server stuff ends on a separate partitions.

If the webserver / mailserver / fileserver all use /sys to access/store their data, then i'd put /sys separate .
The /var partition seems a bit big, but you may need it.
Swap and boot are ok in size.

swap = 4Gb
/boot = 250Mb
/ = 50 Gb
/var = 50Gb
/sys = 500Gb
/home = rest

with /var and /sys on their own partitions, you could probably do with a root of 10 GB or so, but if you're not going to use lvm let's give root plenty of space.

Too much space for "/" can be an issue. The HDD read head will have to travel more and that can impact performance. A 10 GB "/" is more than enough. You'll probably only use have of that anyway. Like Lone_Wolf said, LVM is an interesting option too, because it allows resizing partitions on-the-fly. Not to mention snapshots.
