Giving monsterwm a spin. I have to say, I'm impressed with this tiny, little guy.

Still subtle.
Less shit, more focus.
Next stop is to get conky working so that i don't need a bar only for the information about battery and time. Someone got any ideas?
Tried some stuff out, but havn't got it to work properly yet. Subtle still handles it as a client and i'm running out of ideas.
I know I'm paranoid, but am I paranoid enought....

Check if a) you have locale set properly (UTF-8), b) your font provides the characters you need to display the prompt (actually the majority of ttf fonts will/should have them).
I have done both of these and the question marks still appear. Any other ideas?

post output of:
cat /etc/rc.conf | grep locale
Also, this might help....

When I input that command, nothing shows up, it just returns me to a new prompt. I've been looking at the Wiki for a while now. Tried a few different things: uncommenting locale in locale-gen, setting locale in .bashrc, changing the font command in .Xresources but so far nothing. I'm pretty stumped.

In /etc/rc.conf
LOCALE="en_US.UTF-8"
Also, re-read the wiki..... The answer's RIGHT there at the beginning....

TIMEZONE="Pacific/Auckland"
KEYMAP="us"
CONSOLEFONT=
CONSOLEMAP=
LOCALE="en_US.UTF-8"

What's a hex color patch?
Man, as much as I like the idea of solarized - its so bloody low contrast. How can you see anything on that screen during the day?

Thanks. I'm happy with it too, and have to forward all praise and credit to moetunes, cookiemon5ter, stlarch and (once I get monsterwm multi-monitor up and running) Cloudef for their work.

After being a happy xfce user for many years, I decided to give gnome 3 yet another go. This time around, I actually like it. Sure the customization options aren't readily available, but they are there now and with the right number of extensions, I can actually tweak it into something that suits me and my workflow. And I really do like the shell though it would be nice it if were more keyboard friendly (been able to work around that by setting keybindings in dconf though).
Only things I am really missing is a proper empathy shell extention that allows me to access the contact list from the bar in a dropdown menu or something similar and maybe an extention to orient the shell and workspaces horizontally instead of vertically. Marlin is a great file manager. Incredibly fast.

That's really nice! What pdf viewer is that?
I belive it's mupdf. It might also be llpp which is based on mupdf but it doesn't seem to work with standalone WMs (at least for me) which I regret deeply.

llpp-git works perfectly fine on it's own, a very awesome pdf (xps/cbx) reader. (Uses OpenGL and mupdf, giving it speed others can only dream of.)

I agree. It's the fastest pdf viewer I've ever seen. Replaced zathura here.
