[Solved] Long term support (LTS) kernel dependencies

As far as I can find, there is no Wiki on the LTS kernel out there, but if there is, please redirect me if this is answered elsewhere.

I am looking to install the LTS kernel alongside the [core] version as a "fallback" in case something get updated in the [core] kernel that breaks my system. Since this system is a Virtualbox host, I need to be sure that my Virtualbox guests can still run if I have to fallback to the LTS kernel. I noticed that there is a virtualbox-modules-lts package in addition to the virtualbox-modules package. My question is twofold: 1) is it safe to have both the virtualbox-modules-lts and virtualbox-modules package installed? and 2) would the [core] kernel only use the virtualbox-modules and lts kernel only use the virtualbox-modules-lts then?

Yes and yes. You only need to look at the list of files for each to determine this.

Are the lts modules actually needed if you use both the main kernel and the lts? The reason I ask as I am doing the same thing and I have always only used the virtualbox-archlinux-modules and not the lts version. VirtualBox seems to work fine using the other while on the lts kernel, but could be way wrong. But if you try and install both it fails with

error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)
virtualbox-archlinux-modules-lts: /usr/lib/udev/rules.d/60-vboxguest.rules exists in filesystem

So it seems that you can not have both? Just curious so I understand correctly. Thanks.

He's talking about the modules for hosts. You're talking about the modules for guests.

Ahhhhh opps my bad. Makes sense now, sorry that I missed that
