Hi everybody,
I got a problem with an external hard disk, Western Digital My Book Essential. I was copying some files to the hdd, and then gave me an input/ouput error, and the hard disk never came back since that. Now I can't mount it, windows or linux either. I dissasembled it and connected directly to a motherboard with a sata cable, but the bios didn't recognize the hdd...
If I connect the hd in Linux, I can't mount it. It's not recognized by the system, I can't try to mount it because it doesn't exist at the /dev/. The only information I got it's:
Jun 9 12:35:14 localhost kernel: [ 3405.575913] usb 4-1.2: new high-speed USB device number 5 using ehci_hcd
Jun 9 12:35:14 localhost mtp-probe: checking bus 4, device 5: "/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.0/usb4/4-1/4-1.2"
Jun 9 12:35:14 localhost mtp-probe: bus: 4, device: 5 was not an MTP device
I don't know if somebody knows a way to access to the disk, I only wish save the information. I don't care if the disk it's usable again.
Thank you!

Seems your disk's dead, I don't have any forensics experience but it may be difficult to extract any data if your system can't recognize it - although I know WD have ways to recover data from it by disassembling the disk's plates in a specially-controlled vacuum environment and inserting them in a working HD.

Golden rule of the information age: always have backups!
Because HDD's can die from somewhere between 1.5 months and 10 years (with an average of 3-5 years).
I have made a personal commitment not to reply in topics that start with a lowercase letter. Proper grammar and punctuation is a sign of respect, and if you do not show any, you will NOT receive any help (at least not from me).

Well, my hard disk it's finally dead. The data recovery costs arround 900€ (~1100$), so I decided to replace it using warranty and forget about recovery all the data (basically I will miss tv shows, because all I lost was that and backups).
Thank you anyway.
