[Solved] Optiarc DVD RW AD-7561S AH03 not working consistently.

I have a DVD RW drive that's an OEM drive made by Sony for HP.  It'll read some CDs, but only some of the time.  And it won't read any DVDs.  I'm not sure what to do; I've tried finding drivers/firmware for it.  I've searched google, sony.com, the Arch forums (partially) and the Arch wiki with no results, I've even tried to figure out if there is a generic firmware driver thingy that I could use, but I haven't had any luck.

how old is your drive?

Is your issue specific to arch ?

does the hardware work good on other OSes?

Re: [Solved] Optiarc DVD RW AD-7561S AH03 not working consistently.

Well, I got my laptop back in 2009, but it was probably made in 2005, which is the date that a lot of my laptop's original Windows' system files dated back to when I first got it.

No, when I first started to use Linux, I was using Ubuntu; my drive worked fine back then.   It only started acting weird after I installed Kiwi Linux.  Then it just stopped working and I couldn't get it to work until I reinstalled Windows.  But with Kiwi Linux, my drive didn't work AT ALL.  With Arch, it still works some of the time.

I mean, technically my drive works with Arch, in the sense that I open it without having to use a paper clip to push the emergency-power-off-eject button.  But Arch doesn't seem to recognize a lot of commercial computer games.  And I have lib32-libdvdcss and libdvdcss installed.  (I also have the libdvdread and libdvdnav libraries installed, and I'm installing the lib32-bit versions of those two libraries right now. )

I'm beginning to wonder whether this is just a problem with the Linux Kernel and not so much a problem with my optical drive's functionality.

(Is there a command that will tell me how old a piece of hardware actually IS?)

Really?  I mean, it's from the vista era, so it shouldn't be THAT old.  It's a dual core, Vista-period laptop.  It came out just before the N-standard was released for WiFi.  You sure?

Nevermind about what I said the age was earlier.  I just looked up my processor's stats on Intel's website and my processor was only released in 2009.  So my computer's only about 2 1/2 years old, soon to be 3.

I have had similar experience with DVD drives, AFAIK it looks like your DVD drive has done its time.

kk.  I was worried that might be the case.  I was hoping it'd just be a matter of finding some new firmware for it.  I've been trying to find some, to see if there was an update, but HP doesn't have anything for the drive, even though they should, and Sony doesn't because they made it for HP; so HP should have the firmware, but HP doesn't... so yeah.  Not sure what to do.  I'll just keep looking and hang tight, I guess.

Was looking at another post about CD-RW drive problems and I saw this thing about wodim --devices and wodim -scanbus.  So I tried them and this is what I got.

wodim --devices
wodim: No such file or directory.
Cannot open SCSI driver!
For possible targets try 'wodim --devices' or 'wodim -scanbus'.
For possible transport specifiers try 'wodim dev=help'.
For IDE/ATAPI devices configuration, see the file README.ATAPI.setup from
the wodim documentation.
wodim -scanbus
wodim: No such file or directory.

Might the fact that my DVD drive is a SCSI drive have anything to do with it?  I'll check the forums for posts regarding it, but I hope that's not the issue.  I mean, the drive spins up when I put a disk in there, will sometimes read the disc until shutdown--and only shutdown--but won't mount them.

Here's what I get when I enter the wodim /dev/sr0 command.

wodim /dev/sr0
wodim: No write mode specified.
wodim: Assuming -tao mode.
wodim: Future versions of wodim may have different drive dependent defaults.
Device was not specified. Trying to find an appropriate drive...
Detected CD-R drive: /dev/sr0

Device type : Removable CD-ROM
Version : 5
Response Format: 2
Capabilities :
Vendor_info : 'Optiarc '
Identification : 'DVD RW AD-7561S '
Revision : 'AH03'
Device seems to be: Generic mmc2 DVD-R/DVD-RW.
wodim: Cannot load media with this drive!
wodim: Try to load media by hand.
Using generic SCSI-3/mmc CD-R/CD-RW driver (mmc_cdr).

Supported modes: TAO PACKET SAO SAO/R96P SAO/R96R RAW/R16 RAW/R96P RAW/R96R
wodim: No medium found. Cannot open '/dev/sr0'.

I notice that it doesn't have a write mode specified, but I'm not sure what that would have to do with reading media.
Any ideas, oh and thanks for the advice hadrons.

*sigh* I'm afraid that I think that you may be right.  hmm  Oh, well.  It was a good DVD burner/drive while it worked.  tongue May it rest in pieces, as that is far more likely than it resting in peace in the long run.
