Battery monitoring partially breaks after suspend

I'm experiencing a subtle problem with battery monitoring on my laptop.  The problem appears after the computer is first suspended and persists until the computer is turned off and back on.  Note that a reboot does not fix the problem, whereas a shutdown does.

Symptoms

  • cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state prints rate and capacity in mA/mAh before the problem begins, but prints rate and capacity in mW/mWh after the problem occurs.

  • ibam works fine before the problem occurs, but prints "No apm data available" after the problem occurs.

  • /var/log/errors.log contains the following line, coincident with suspends that cause the problem:

May 21 13:40:04 localhost kernel: [ 171.735681] ACPI: Unable to dock!

Hardware

  • Lenovo Thinkpad X220 (datasheet)

  • lspci -nn

Re: Battery monitoring partially breaks after suspend

I also have an x220 and didn't realize that I had the same issue until I saw this post. For me though xfce4-power-manager still reports everything correctly so I never noticed. I also found that if I suspend and resume on AC power the problem does not happen.

x220 tablet, same problem, even on AC.

Re: Battery monitoring partially breaks after suspend

interesting I just tested mine and found that if I suspend/resume on AC it will go back to mA/mAh if it was prevously displaying mW/mWh

Re: Battery monitoring partially breaks after suspend

My x220 also has this issue. ibam complains of "no apm data available" only after suspend. acpi (the program) still continues to give me battery information,
however.

Was a fix ever found for this issue? (Other than rebooting, that is.)

x220 here, same problem.

/var/log/kernel.log shows

Re: Battery monitoring partially breaks after suspend

On my x200i there is no battery file or folder in /proc/acpi .
However i get the same error messages.
logs:

ACPI: Waking up from system sleep state S3
ACPI: \_SB_.PCI0.LPC_.EC__.BAT1 - docking
ACPI: Unable to dock!

@dmlawrence: Do you have tp_smapi kernel module loaded? ( can be found on AUR )
It has battery functions represented in /sys like so:

....
/sys/devices/platform/smapi/BAT0/last_full_capacity # in mWh
/sys/devices/platform/smapi/BAT0/remaining_percent # remaining percent of energy (set by calibration)
/sys/devices/platform/smapi/BAT0/remaining_percent_error # error range of remaing_percent (not reset by calibration)
/sys/devices/platform/smapi/BAT0/remaining_running_time # in minutes, by last minute average power
/sys/devices/platform/smapi/BAT0/remaining_running_time_now # in minutes, by instantenous power
/sys/devices/platform/smapi/BAT0/remaining_charging_time # in minutes
/sys/devices/platform/smapi/BAT0/remaining_capacity # in mWh
/sys/devices/platform/smapi/BAT0/design_capacity # in mWh
....

A bit OT, but interesting for us thinkpad users.

There is a way to set the charge thresholds for your batteries.
It can be done with the acpi_call kernel module and a script called acpi-bat.

tpacpi-bat

acpi_call

Works on my laptop.

Re: Battery monitoring partially breaks after suspend

Google told me, that it may be linked to a crypted /home-volume. (Link (german))

I have an crypted /home-volume, anyone of you, too?

Re: Battery monitoring partially breaks after suspend

I think it is related to dockable battery which ACPI is complaining about. I also believe that it is mostly the thinkpad_acpi's developers' lack of interest that is to blame here!
