Arch optimized for athlon-xp

Are there any plans for an athlon-xp optimized version of arch?

Re: Arch optimized for athlon-xp

Don't think so
The performance "boost" would be so small. And the number of users running  this would also be to small to make it a healty community. But you can always make it yourself!

AMD-64 may happen.  Some of the developers would need to get AMD-64 machines though.  You gonna buy me one? wink

What about on the flip side... if I got an AMD-64, could I be a developer?

Re: Arch optimized for athlon-xp

bah no i don't think the user wants that at all.

realistically though 64bit optimization would be a good thing as not many distros are right now

as for athlon-xp optimization one can easily dio that on their own but  if you are going to do that you may as well use crux wink

but then I want Xeon and Itanium optimalizations as well and a PowerPC version of arch and I want to take over the world!

Re: Arch optimized for athlon-xp

AMD-64 are low cost now so if Arch can be AMD-64 optimized i think it will be very good. What about donations? I think that many of Arch users will donate for the Arch AMD-64. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Gvre

Re: Arch optimized for athlon-xp

I'd certainly donate for AMD-64 optimization for Arch.

Re: Arch optimized for athlon-xp

I'm curious in how much this would make a difference in normal day use except the fact that we can say that we're (one of the) first to have a 64bit OS

Re: Arch optimized for athlon-xp

I suspect it would be quite an improvement. Although the 64 bit processors are backwards compatible with 32 bit software, wouldn't it make quite a different to be able to actually *use* all that power? Or is most of that stuff at the kernel level as opposed to the compiler level?

In fact Suse were the ones that did the real porting (yet, I still don't like their distro ;-) ...). As for other distros that have AMD64 versions : Mandrake, Debian, Gentoo and more (I beleive Turbolinux - there is a series of articles on www.osnews.com on that topic).

Re: Arch optimized for athlon-xp

How about colocating an amd64 machine and letting the devs have access to it.  Pooled resources and stuff.  ssh and vnc for building and testing of packages

who will sponsor the machine?
who will sponsor the bandwidth?

if you solve this 2, i'll login to this machine to build+maintain the repos for 64bit :-)

Re: Arch optimized for athlon-xp

How much bandwidth would you need? Could you do this over 128K-256K?

I have a cable modem that gives me 4.5M down(to the house) and 384k up(from the house). If that would work, I might be able to work something out.
