Finally took the plunge and abandoned XFCE's Terminal in favour of urxvt. Here's my first colour scheme, built around #3399FF, a blue I found a little while ago. I think it looks gorgeous in action, so feel free to give it a whirl. My font, incidentally, is "xft:inconsolata:size=9" and looking much cleaner in urxvt than it did in Terminal.

No, vim is not Xresources aware.

vim colorschemes, can be Xresources aware. My c00kiez colorscheme for vim, maps to the terminal colors and uses those for vim. That means, if I change a color from Xresources, then the vim colorscheme also changes. This maybe not be exactly what you asked, but you get the point.

no, not by default, it depends on the colorscheme. If you use direct values, ie

hi Comment       ctermfg=56
hi Number        ctermfg=153
" etc

then the colors are unaffected, from changes to your terminal colorscheme.
but if you use color names, and more accurately the color names used by the terminal then the color will change as you change the terminal colorscheme, ie

hi Comment       ctermfg=Magenta
hi Number        ctermfg=DarkGreen
" etc

now, depending on how many colors one uses on the terminal, you can have

Dark<color-name>                for the first 8 colors, those work even on a console/tty
example: 'hi Comment DarkRed' is same as \e[0;31m or $(tput setaf 1)

Dark<color-name> cterm=bold     for the next 8 colors, those also work on a console/tty
example: 'hi Comment DarkRed cterm=bold' is same as \e[1;31m or $(tput bold; tput setaf 1) 

<color-name>                    without the 'Dark' prefix, those will not work on the console/tty
example: 'hi Comment Red' is same as $(tput setaf 9)

and then you have the 256 colors that come with vim, using direct values, which wont work the console/tty too, because consoles/tty only support 8 colors, plus 8 "bold" colors. but, most people dont use consoles/ttys nowdays, so you dont have to worry about it.
I use them, so I created that colorscheme to work wherever I am, and as it matches my terminal colorscheme, I dont have to maintain two separate colorschemes.

But doesn't this disprove what c00kiemons5ter said? I have quickly glimpsed over that neverland.vim colorscheme, and all of the definitions there have values between 0 and 255.

I always find it very annoying that every time I want to try out a new nice ViM colorscheme, I also need to search for a fitting .Xdefaults.

EDIT: Well, if somebody could suggest how to better synchronize vim and Xdefaults/Xresources colorschemes, I'd appreciate that.

This is not true.

Exercise: apply your suggested :highlights above, and do:

printf '\e]4;56;#ff0000\a\e]4;153;green\a'

The link I posted earlier should've made this pretty clear.
There's currently a maximum of 256 colors that can be used
simultaneously in the terminal.

Of course vim is affected if you modify those. Just as a colorscheme
made for 8/16 color terminals will look different depending on how the
user have their ANSI color definitions set up, so will a colorscheme
that's using the extended colors if a user happen to have modifed those.

There's no colors 'that come with vim'.
The color values are defined in the terminal source code.
The number we are using in vim is only the index, 0-15 is ANSI colors,
16-255 is the extended set. Vim has no idea what those colors really
are, and it can't, either.

What it does, however, is guesswork. Very, very badly.
It's defining a map, below, so that if a color value is given as a
string instead on a direct index, depending on what the terminal claims
to support, the most appropriate index will be used.
This is wrong, wrong, wrong because it relies on what's hardcoded in
xterm by default and using this way to specify colors should be avoided, since
it's more confusing seeing something specified as 'green' while it's clearly
purple than it is to lookup the actual index.

But surely this is not because the author are using modified extended
colors, but that the colorscheme itself is using the ANSI colors (which
you *and* him have modified)?

Now, this is usually not such a big issue because most people doesn't
even know that it is possible to modify anything but the ANSI colors (at
runtime), so they don't. Here's where I thought cookie knew this, but maybe
not so.

Since you now know I'm only using what I've written myself, I'm also the one
in charge so I can do whatever I want.
But, not really - I'm very selective with what I modify in the extended
colorset - what I have changed are colors that I'll never use for
anything, or that's so ugly that I simply had to do something about it.

yeah, I should have known better, I've even used colocoke.
What I wanted to say, is that I've observed that the 16 colors - the 'Dark<color>' and 'Dark<color> cterm=bold' - will always (at least here) map to the 16 colors set for the terminal colorscheme (\e0;3Xm and \e1;3Xm). So having a vim colorscheme based only on those colors, will change according to (and match) your terminal colorscheme changes.
As dmz said, this scales to 256 colors too, ofcourse, as you can change all 256 colors to what you like (dah), but most people dont go that far. I only use 16 colors on my terminal.
So if you haven't changed the extended colors and the vim colorscheme doesnt contain the above colors (the ones that map to the colors the terminal colorscheme uses) the vim colorscheme should appear the same.
