Kernel not booting with "alloc magic is broken"

When I booted my PC for the second time today I suddenly got the following error:

loading linux vmlinuz26
alloc magic is broken at 0xcf6fe180

My first boot was totally fine. I have changed no settings, but I have probably installed some updates. Both the normal arch and the fallback fail to boot. My Windows however does succeed to boot without issues. Does anyone know what causes this?

Which packages were upgraded exactly? Also, which kernel are you running (not the default Arch kernel I assume by looking at the output you posted)?

I can't check right now which packages were updated, but I am using the default kernel.

When you're back at your system, check and post the following (boot from an Arch livecd or another one you have):

- Which packages were upgraded (/var/log/pacman.log).
- Your bootloader config.
- The output of "lsinitcpio -a /boot/<initramfsimage>"

I'm a bit confused. The following output from your bootloader config would mean that you're not actually trying to boot the stock ARCH kernel (and initramfs), but rather what I assume to be a 2.6.x kernel.

I see what you mean, I generated a new grub.cfg, and rebooted the system (vmlinuz26 must have been a symlink, because I checked my kernel version regularly and that was fine). I am guessing a forced fsck is the culprit and deleted some files this morning. Anyway, now I get all kinds of file not found errors. It seems like my partition is messed up beyond help and a reinstall is in order

A reinstall is a bit drastic (assuming that the rest of your Arch install is still intact). Simply try booting from an Arch livecd, chroot into your existing install and reinstall the kernel and bootloader (and fix the bootloader config obviously).

You're probably right. I see now that my grub2 is kind of messed up. When I reinstalled grub2, I still see one "file not found /boot/something" that flashes before I get to the menu. It disappears too quickly for me to read the entire error, but of course I want to know what it says. Have you got any idea where grub stores logs or how I can freeze grub pre-menu?
