Trying to run the daemon manually doesn't work. I get a terse error message indicating that the daemon is not running, but with no indication of cause.
If I remount the root filesystem in a child directory, it seems to work. Sadly, this is a hack. Any advice? Does anybody else run a NILFS2 rootfs?

Although I haven't got NILFS2 - I did some searches and this is what I've found here:

Someone had already placed a bug report, and have suggested doing a symlink to the main root partition at /dev/root.

Good call; thanks. I added a line in rc.sysinit before mounting the root filesystem to create that symlink.
