I just reinstalled Arch to get rid of built-up cruft (I've been using Arch for several years now), and I've mostly gotten things all configured the way I want them again. However, when I tell my monitor to turn off (like by putting the computer to sleep, or using `xset dpms force off`), the monitor doesn't actually turn off. Instead I just get a little floating box that says "No DVI-D cable," which is the same thing I get if I have the monitor powered on but the DVI cable unplugged. Previously, the monitor would go to a low-power sleep mode (amber LED, and with the backlight totally off).
My setup: a desktop with onboard Radeon HD 4200 graphics (ATI RS880 chipset), the xf86-video-ati driver, latest version of KDE (4.8), and the default configuration of all graphics stuff (I haven't put in a custom X config or anything).
Any ideas what I need to do to signal to the monitor to go to sleep?

Strangely enough, I think this one was hardware: several days ago I moved my computer, and when I unplugged the DVI cable I discovered that it had been extremely loose. After reconnecting everything, the monitor worked exactly as before: it goes to a low-power state just like it should. So apparently if the monitor cable is loose in just the right way, the monitor may not turn off. Strange. Anyway, it's been behaving properly for several days now, so I'm marking this resolved.
