[Solved] Problems with nvidia graphics driver

I have a GeForce GTX 580 graphics card.

My SSD, which just held arch64, died and so I had to rebuild my system. This system was working fine and was using the nvidia drivers.

The rebuild went fine until I had to install the graphics driver.

First attempt I went straight for the nvidia and nvidia-utilities packages and ran nvidia-xconfig to generate a conf file. On reboot it gets past the syslinux boot loader screen and then the screen clears and I can't do anything. Can't get a terminal using <ctrl><alt><f1>. The only thing I can seem do is reboot and rebuild again. And this is without starting X.

Second attempt I tried the nouveau drivers. This at least gave me a system I could work on after a reboot but when I launched gnome the screen was flickering and after approx. 30 seconds hung and I had to reboot. I tried this with and without the nouveau-dri package.

Third attempt I removed the nouveau drivers and went back to the nvidia drivers and got the same result as attempt one.

I noticed on the nvidia site that if I put my card in they say that the drivers should be 295.59 whilst the ones from arch are 302.17

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Re: [Solved] Problems with nvidia graphics driver

Have you tried an older nvidia driver? You can check in AUR or download the old nvidia packages

Re: [Solved] Problems with nvidia graphics driver

Fixed my problem - added nosetmode to the initrd line in grub.

Everything is fine now and am using the latest nvidia drivers.

Re: [Solved] Problems with nvidia graphics driver

Shouldn't that be "nomodeset" or does "nosetmode" do something different?
