Well, with pacman there is a "conflict" when two pkgs try to install files with the same name to the same location. Secondly, if you have two version of a pkg both called php for example then pacman can only have one pkg named php installed a time. You can recreate the one pkg as php4 for example but the files of php and php4 will still conflict. Therefore you will have to alter the installation location for the files within php4.
It's very simple but without an example of your own it doesn't make much sense
