[SOLVED] - Arch wont work with nvidia Quadro NVS 4200M on T520

Hi Archers

Hoping for some assistance. I've had this new laptop for 2 months+ and can't get it to work if nvidia hardware card is enabled.

Luckily in the BIOS config display options you have 3 choices:
* integrated (intel only)
* discrete (nvidia only)
* Nvidia Optimus (switch between intel and nvidia)

If I select intel and confgure arch to use intel, no problems.

If I however configure it to use discrete/nvidia with either the nouveou driver or nvidia driver I have issues.

Nouveou driver problems:
Hangs on boot - Waiting for UDev uevents to be processed
Or
Just after grub it hangs
OR
Latest version it works and logs into KDE and after 10 minutes it hangs and system is dead

nvidia driver problems:
Hangs on boot - Waiting for UDev uevents to be processed
OR
Tons of I/O error dev sda on boot and doesn't boot
OR
Logs into X/KDE and hangs
OR
Logs into X/KDE and mouse/keyboard doesnt work

Hardware:
Lenovo ThinkPad T520
VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF119 [Quadro NVS 4200M] (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
product: GF119 [Quadro NVS 4200M]
vendor: NVIDIA Corporation

Software tried:
linux 3.3.x 3.4.x
xf86-video-nouveau-1.0.1 / xf86-video-nouveau-0.0.16_git20120512 / xf86-video-nouveau-0.0.16_git20120210
nvidia-295.40 up to nvidia-302.17-1

According to ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux … chips.html I should have a supported graphics chipset but I can't get it to work.

I even dual booted windows and the nvidia graphics works fine in boot discrete/optimus modes.

Not sure if it's related to https://bugs.archlinux.org/index.php?do … er_id=9003

Anyone have any ideas of what I can try??
Hopefully someone has got this working or have some info on what I can try.

with nvidia blob should works out-of-the-box....

could be a configuration problem caused by have either drivers installed

try with only the nvidia binary installed, PAY ATTENTION on configuration settings setup-ed with nouveau

to cross-check your steps when switching drivers.

I agree nvidia blob *should* work out of the box. I've set up arch on other nvidia laptops with nvidia blob tons of times with no problems, but mine doesn't work.

I completely remove all other drivers installed cleanly.
Also there is no special configuration settings I can see to pay attention to with either drivers, so what is nTia89 referrring to?
With nvidia blob its simply nvidia-xconfig and with nouveau there is no configuration settings I can see on https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Nouveau .
I never have both nvidia and nouveau installed. Same goes for the intel drivers.

I remember that you must blacklist something.....

Read carefully the nouveau wiki

And search in the wiki your laptop specific page

The proprietary nvidia driver blacklists nouveau automatically at boot, so that shouldn't be the issue here (nor does it require any additional configuration).

xorg.conf would be one to pay attention to.

Have you tried bumblebee? I installed bumblebee on similar system T420i with same Optimus technology and Nvidia NVS4200. And it works flawlessly. bbswitch works along with bumblebee and saves power too.

No that's the only thing I haven't yet tried. That's it's nice to see that you have and it works for you. I'll try in the next two days hopefully and report back!

Woops I was supposed to report back a while ago and give feedback.

Anyway, bumblebee works perfectly and I can finally use my nvidia card in Arch.

Great it worked. Mark the thread as solved sometime. Also: In case that you did steps for your machine which are not obvious from the bumblebee wiki, it would be great for others to get some hints. Those are pretty common notebooks.

There was no specific instructions for my laptop. Just followed the bumblebee arch wiki page.

Can't seem to figure out how to mark the thread as resolved.
