hard freezes return?

I experienced a lot of hard freezes with a run of kernels a little while ago. A number of people seemed to be experiencing similar issues but I'm not sure what the cause was. It was possibly linked to intel, maybe something to do with memory management, maybe something completely different... Anyway, going from 2G to 8G RAM helped a little but later system upgrades helped a *lot* and even the non-lts kernel stopped freezing on me.

There have been several significant updates this week including the kernel, glibc etc. and today I had another hard freeze and had to switch off at the power switch. I booted into recovery mode just to see if I could see anything in the logs which might get overwritten on further reboot but nothing interesting seemed to have happened at all.

Is there something I've missed? Or something that's changed which I ought to have made some adjustment for? I don't see anything recent in the forums which makes me think it is something I've done or failed to to but I cannot think what.

I realise I'm not providing much information - I just don't know what to look for. When this happens, the machine is completely unresponsive, nothing gets logged, etc.

On reboot, I got some complaints about klauncher not being available and not being able to connect to the system bus. I restarted kile and did not get the errors the second time.

The last kernel upgrade I installed was on 2012-06-19 (along with lots of KDE stuff) which suggests it is not the kernel upgrade itself, whatever it is. (Or it is not something about that which I hit for several days, at least.) glibc was upgraded 2012-06-22, though. Here's the most recent upgrades from pacman.log (2012-06-22 and later):

Note that I only reinstalled filesystem because I got confused and thought that I had lost the changes to /etc/gshadow without incorporating them correctly. However, I didn't get a .pacnew file the second time so I assume I'd incorporated the changes which needed to be made. (Not sure how this works, quite.) I didn't get one for /etc/group either but I know I incorporated those changes the first time. I didn't change the permissions on /media, /mnt or /usr/local/. However, these seem to match what the package expects following the "reboot" forced by the freeze.

Should I maybe have rebooted immediately following the update to filesystem or one of the other packages upgraded on the 23rd? I didn't do so as I didn't think that would be necessary.

EDIT: Obviously I rebooted following the upgrade to glibc on the 22nd.
