xfce not loading wm, and mouse cursers not working properly

seems to have happend without me doing anything but a system update.
problems:

1 - no window manager, or desktop. taskbar loads, but i think thats it. something is keeping launch from working too.

2 - mouse pointers don't initially load--no pointer image at all. if i open guake, a text select pointer will appear, and when i leave that window i'll get the generic "X" x11 pointer from then on.

update 2: details of x startup are below

heres my xlog (errors from startx) when starting xfce4:

Re: xfce not loading wm, and mouse cursers not working properly

How do you start X, and (if relevant) what's in your ~/.xinitrc?

Also, when you post output into the forums, please use [ code ] tags.

Re: xfce not loading wm, and mouse cursers not working properly

x is started at login by .bashrc calling startx
.bashrc:

#
# ~/.bash_profile
#

[[ -f ~/.bashrc ]] && . ~/.bashrc

if [[ -z $DISPLAY ]] && ! [[ -e /tmp/.X11-unix/X0 ]] && (( EUID )); then
  while true; do
    read -p 'Do you want to start X? (y/n/u): '
    case $REPLY in
#      [Yy]) exec xinit -- /usr/bin/X -nolisten tcp vt7 ;;
      [Yy]) exec nohup startx > .xlog & vlock ;;
      [Uu]) exec nohup startx > .xlog & bash;;
      [Nn]) break ;;
      *) printf '%s\n' 'Please answer y or n.' ;;
    esac
  done
fi

#export PATH =$PATH:/home/testuser/bin

.xinitrc

#!/bin/sh
#
# ~/.xinitrc
#
# Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)
#do i need that "tcp-nolisten" thing in here?
#where is the dbus-launch stoped below?
#if i use another wm, does it need the lines un-commented out?

#this is a xfce4 workaround for starting dbus-launch after startxfce4
#the 'this...' line above was un-commented out!?, and the lines below were auto commented out...
#i'll try re using it...
if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
  for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
    [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
  done
  unset f
fi

# exec gnome-session
# exec startkde
# exec startxfce4
# ...or the Window Manager of your choice
exec ck-launch-session startxfce4

#ck-launch-session startxfce4 & wmpid=$!
#other programs to launch

Re: xfce not loading wm, and mouse cursers not working properly

I can barely make heads or tails of what all that in your bash_profile is *supposed* to do, but I suspect that's where the problem is.

Does running a regular "xinit" from tty1 work?

Edit: one thing I do know is that "exec xinit" from a tty will usually fail.  The "exec" part replaces the login shell, so you are no longer logged in, but trying to start X.  The same troubleshooting step applies: run a regular "xinit" from a tty.

Edit2: a recent thread had a problem from running "exec xinit" and IIRC the symptoms were similar.  That most likely is the problem.

Re: xfce not loading wm, and mouse cursers not working properly

i got that login script from the wiki:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Start_X_at_Boot

it asks if i want to start x after i login at a tty; no dm is launched at boot. it then locks the terminal so it can't be switched to even if x is screensaver locked. i added the 'u' option to leave it unlocked.

i'll try it out, thanks. do you have a link to that other thread?

Re: xfce not loading wm, and mouse cursers not working properly

tried that 'exec xinit' and 'xinit' from a tty, both started up xfce with the same problems as before. and one of them logged me out of the tty.

Re: xfce not loading wm, and mouse cursers not working properly

1) Adapt your .bash_profile and .xinitrc into something sensible.
2) Try removing/renaming ~/.config/xfce4. A problem there might cause problems as you described.
3) Are you sure you installed everything you need for xfce4?

My .bash_profile and .xinitrc:

#
# ~/.bash_profile
#

[[ -f ~/.bashrc ]] && . ~/.bashrc

# StartX when logging in from tty1.
if [[ -z $DISPLAY ]] && [[ $(tty) = /dev/tty1 ]]; then
startx
fi
#!/bin/sh
#
# ~/.xinitrc
#

xrandr --output LVDS --mode 1600x900 --output HDMI-0 --mode 1920x1080 --left-of LVDS&
exec ck-launch-session startxfce4

Re: xfce not loading wm, and mouse cursers not working properly

You can try to do this.

rm -R ~/.cache/sessions

it may have effects.

Re: xfce not loading wm, and mouse cursers not working properly

I have had this problem as well, was using xfce4 with all its goodies installed. Working fine for months, then I did system upgrade via pacman and there its broke. XFCE will launch but its overlapping windows. One thing to note is that I use nvidia vga in my lenovo stinkpad.

To work around that for now since I dont feel like fixing it, put fluxbox.

Re: xfce not loading wm, and mouse cursers not working properly

deleting everything in ~/.cache/sessions/* and ~/.cache/xfce4 fixed it for me.

Re: xfce not loading wm, and mouse cursers not working properly

deleting everything in .cache "fixed" the problem. but i had to redo my panel and desktop... and all other settings.

Re: xfce not loading wm, and mouse cursers not working properly

What probably caused this issue in the first place is that you may have inadvertantly logged in as root which may have messed up your .config folder. I just had something similar happen and pretty sure that's what caused it.

Maybe this will help someone who stumbles onto this thread.

Re: xfce not loading wm, and mouse cursers not working properly

I had the same problem and ould you're right, loggin in as root is causing this problem.

anyway, like willca77 mentioned deleting everything in ~/.cache/sessions/* and ~/.cache/xfce4 solves the issue.

thank you!
