Re: Raid0 Btrfs grub boot experiments full size devices (See Edits)

Generated a three device partitioned boot grub2 raid0 in my machine.

Utilized pcie sata device for the third device as Master.

Results indicate a problem with one device (all maxell16GB 400x udma devices) which does not return the same speed as the other two.

Hdparm results follow:

sh-4.2# hdparm -t /dev/md0 /dev/sda /dev/sdb /dev/sdd

/dev/md0:
 Timing buffered disk reads: 638 MB in 3.01 seconds = 212.05 MB/sec

/dev/sda:
 Timing buffered disk reads: 250 MB in 3.02 seconds = 82.71 MB/sec

/dev/sdb:
 Timing buffered disk reads: 244 MB in 3.00 seconds = 81.27 MB/sec

/dev/sdd:
 Timing buffered disk reads: 198 MB in 3.01 seconds = 65.76 MB/sec
sh-4.2#

Will attempt a different arrangement of devices to establish all at the higher speed.

EDIT:  Cannot utilize three devices at higher speed in raid0 with my machine as it is configured.  With one device connected as a slave, the speeds of the devices are all 82mb/s or therabouts but the device /md0 speed falls to 130mb/s. The machine has only two Master sata ports and the pcie sata does not perform as sataII (probably bus limited).  Need a sata device port multiplier I guess....one such is a new mobo at $800!

Re: Raid0 Btrfs grub boot experiments full size devices (See Edits)

Re-installed raid0 to two maxell 400x udma cf cards:

sh-4.2# hdparm -t /dev/md0 /dev/sda /dev/sdb

/dev/md0:
 Timing buffered disk reads: 554 MB in 3.01 seconds = 184.21 MB/sec

/dev/sda:
 Timing buffered disk reads: 250 MB in 3.01 seconds = 82.93 MB/sec

/dev/sdb:
 Timing buffered disk reads: 244 MB in 3.00 seconds = 81.29 MB/sec
sh-4.2#

This speed indication seems to be consistent with many other applications with these maxell devices in raid arrays.

Re: Raid0 Btrfs grub boot experiments full size devices (See Edits)

As an experiment, I connected the paired cf cards in a pattern with one pair on ch0 master and ch3 slave with the boot device in ch0 master.

The second pair of raid devices were connected to ch0slave and ch2 slave.

Each setup is recognized for booting as CH0 devices, one is CH0 master and the other is CH0 slave.

Each can be booted separately and hdparm readings indicate  the read speeds as has been reported in previous post.

Thus one pair is ~29 GB and the other is ~59GB each bootable separately. EDIT: x86_64

My mobo is set to auto bios for boot sequencing on a gigabyte 945GCM-S2 mobo.

This arrangement allows easier selection of raid0 pairs in my machine.

I have yet to try the pcie ports (sata) for a third and fourth paired devices.

I do not expect the pcie to produce high read speeds, however.

So far, so good.!

Re: Raid0 Btrfs grub boot experiments full size devices (See Edits)

Up to this time I haven't made the pcie boot both devices of a raid0 pair.

In toto, I am pleased with the KISS nature of the CF raid0 system.  It has low power required, quiet, higher speed , no latency lags and less complexity in the archlinux operating system.

It is probable that this approach can be improved as time goes on.  I enjoyed the experiments with bootable grub2 partitioned archlinux.

Perhaps the pcie arrangement needs a HOOK such as scsi?  Is there a scsi HOOK?

Re: Raid0 Btrfs grub boot experiments full size devices (See Edits)

It seems that scsi is indeed installed in the system HOOKS so the pcie probably should perform as well.

Try it later.

No luck with pcie.

Todays upgrade includes changing udev.

I will upgrade this raid0 and report the result.

Re: Raid0 Btrfs grub boot experiments full size devices (See Edits)

Approximately 13% of capacity is in use in archlinux system with my compact fllash.

Typical size is 4 to 7 GB for the raid0 pairs.

Typical boot speed is ~7 seconds.  This varies with system content.

No failed components up to this time and many re-installs and dd operations have been applied to all components.  The components have been installed in raid devices for two years or more up to this point.

Re: Raid0 Btrfs grub boot experiments full size devices (See Edits)

Upgraded all five raid0 pairs this date to linux-3.4.3-1-x86_64 with additional packages totaling ~275mb.

System reboots and all is well.

May try a raid0 within a raid0 in an extended experiment.

Each pair of devices has different packages.  Some of these are kdenlive,firefox,vlc,mirage,qtfm,jumanji-git,leafpad,xfce4 among others.

Jumanji is a great package included in all five pairs.

So far, so good..............................

Re: Raid0 Btrfs grub boot experiments full size devices (See Edits)

Corrected a deficiency in xfce4 mouse themes by copying /usr/share/icons from HDD file to all five raid0 pairs.

The mouse cursor is now quite large and is red.  This helps to navigate the curcor for this old man of nearly 87 years.
There have been over 2000 visits to this thread and the experiment continues.

Realizing that hdparm is not a good measure of thruput, I downloaded iozone and ran the iozone -a program with the following results:

A great deal of info is developed and indicates thruput rather than simple sequential.

The headings appear at the top to indicate the test performed and the results are shown in KBYTES.

This set of data was made on maxell 16GB devices running in raid0 /dev/md1.

Re: Raid0 Btrfs grub boot experiments full size devices (See Edits)

Upgraded this date to linux-3.4.4-1 with all five pairs.

No problems encountered.

I am attempting to generate graphs for the iozone data but haven't a clue as to why the Generate_Graphs package does not produce the graphs with the scripts provided for gnu plot.

I would appreciate suggestions for graphing the iozone data with the present state of the iozone packages.  There seems to be a lack of co-ordination with the iozone data file or entries into the scripts file.

I installed the iozone paclages from the aur but they are orphaned.

The data is generated as is shown in previous post but doesn't produce any graphs with the Generate_Graphs command.  Will post the output obtained at a later time.

The packages provided are supposed to generate 3d color graphs for each of the data categories. Much of the google data applies to windows but gnuplot is covered in many url sources.

I guess I just don't understand!!!!!!!!

Re: Raid0 Btrfs grub boot experiments full size devices (See Edits)

Experiment continues with upgrade to linux-3.4.4-2 with no problems.

Will soon have a three device experiment completed with the same kernel.

Re: Raid0 Btrfs grub boot experiments full size devices (See Edits)

Continuing the experiments I generated a three device raid0 bootable grub2 partitioned.

The devices are three adata 16GB 266x compact flash devices.  One of them is in an adapter to a pata port and the others are in adapters to sata ports(sataII)

The results with hdparm on mounted raid0 devices can be misleading.  In the three device case the indicated read speed was ~73mb/s.  If hdparm is run on an unmounted raid0 , from an HDD boot for example, the raid0 speed is double the slowest device read speed.  This is the expected result.

There is a caveat with this data as observed because there was an error in applying dma to the devices, at least one of them.  It is something I need to look into since it doesn't show up in every raid0 system I have geerated.

The three device raid0 took about 1 and 1/2 hours to generate using xfce4 and installing xorg, firefox, leafpad, mirage, vlc, jumanji, thunderbird, xpdf, gamin, gparted and qtfm.

The read speed in hdparm from HDD is 143mb/s.

Re: Raid0 Btrfs grub boot experiments full size devices (See Edits)

Performed an install via internet with archiso x86_64 using 3 maxell 16GB UDMA 400x devices.  Again this is raid0 partitioned boot with grub2 with three CF devices.  The entire gamut including the packages all downloads and installs to xfce4 took ~1 and 1/2 hours.

The three device setup has an interesting sidelight when using hdparm for read speed.  The mobo has one pata and two sata ports such that speeds are not equal for all three devices.  The pata port is limited .

The result of running hdparm within the booted raid0 is shown below:

sh-4.2# hdparm -t /dev/md3

/dev/md3:
 Timing buffered disk reads: 268 MB in 3.01 seconds = 89.09 MB/sec
sh-4.2# hdparm -t /dev/md3 /dev/sda /dev/sdb /dev/sdc

/dev/md3:
 Timing buffered disk reads: 274 MB in 3.01 seconds = 91.04 MB/sec

/dev/sda:
 Timing buffered disk reads: 188 MB in 3.00 seconds = 62.62 MB/sec

/dev/sdb:
 Timing buffered disk reads: 232 MB in 3.02 seconds = 76.83 MB/sec

/dev/sdc:
 Timing buffered disk reads: 222 MB in 3.01 seconds = 73.73 MB/sec
sh-4.2#

Because the linux system now sets up mdadm devices as md127 or some such, the ....cat /proc/mdstat info is oriented thereby. The hdparm run can be made on that device ID to obtain the read speed for the same devices which are not mounted in a running raid.  This is obtained with an HDD boot.  The next post will illustrate what happens with that readout.

Re: Raid0 Btrfs grub boot experiments full size devices (See Edits)

Booted in USB HDD into archlinux.

Performed the hdparm read speed again with the following results...first on /dev/md127 and then after stopping that on the assembled /dev/md3:

 sh-4.2# hdparm -t /dev/md127
/dev/md127:
 Timing buffered disk reads: 630 MB in 3.01 seconds = 209.31 MB/sec
sh-4.2# mdadm --stop /dev/md127
mdadm: stopped /dev/md127
sh-4.2# mdadm --assemble /dev/md3 /dev/sda2 /dev/sdb2 /dev/sdc2
mdadm: /dev/md3 has been started with 3 drives.
sh-4.2# hdparm -t /dev/md3 /dev/sda /dev/sdb /dev/sdc

/dev/md3:
 Timing buffered disk reads: 632 MB in 3.00 seconds = 210.40 MB/sec

/dev/sda:
 Timing buffered disk reads: 194 MB in 3.03 seconds = 64.07 MB/sec

/dev/sdb:
 Timing buffered disk reads: 248 MB in 3.01 seconds = 82.52 MB/sec

/dev/sdc:
 Timing buffered disk reads: 244 MB in 3.00 seconds = 81.24 MB/sec
sh-4.2#

The result is a bit perplexing since the read speed seems out of sync with expected three times the lowest speed of the combo.

It also demonstrates the advantage of using sata ports.
Wish I had four sata ports!!!
