When you're running KDE/GNOME, what is the normal procedure for rebooting?
Is it not smart to type
su
reboot
in a terminal? Should you first log out of KDE, and then reboot?

I usally go to the 'kde button' or 'Gnome button' and then choose restart... 8)

Yes, well I seem to have lost that button somewhere
There is however a "Logout [username]" button, but that only shuts down KDE.

On mine, you after you choose logout user, you have the choice to reboot, logut, or shutdown

you have to install something like xdm or kdm (or gdm? dont know). These are graphical login-manager, and after I`ve installed it the shutdown-button appeared in kde.
Just search the forums, there are some topics about how to install this stuff.
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … hlight=kdm for example.

You can install the KDM or GDM by enabling it in rc.config (as I recall) - it is a service just like network or apache or what have you. That should drop you to a GUI login prompt when you boot the machine.
I have never really played with it enough - I do not remember if the KDM made the shutdown/reboot prompt avaible or not. Before I trusted the KDM I would just log out, and that would shut X down - then I would do the trusty command sudo reboot

or open a terminal & type "shutdown" as root... or add your own menu option that does that and runs as root.
Hapy.
