Lenovo Ideapad U410

We try to install Arch linux on a Lenovo Ideapad U410. It has an SSD and a usual HDD drive. It came with some kind of raid, but we don't know the details. My friend removed it, or at least that is our assumption, and tried to install arch. Everything seemed to proceed smoothly with the installation but after the reboot, the hard disks are nowhere to be found.

The BIOS options are {raid, ahci, compatible}. No matter what we choose, we get the same results. Later on, we tried both Debian and Ubuntu. Nothing worked. Any ideas?

In a more step by step initial approach, how could we ensure that:
1. We don't use raid anymore.
2. Grub is properly configured.

Thanks in advance

Re: Lenovo Ideapad U410

I must add to those myle said, that we had no problem during the installation process with all the distros. The Grub also seemed to be installed correctly, but when we rebooted, the Grub never appeared and the laptop tried to boot with the last option in the boot order which is the ethernet card.

Re: Lenovo Ideapad U410

The problem is due to UEFI. sbosx will update later about what he has found out. Unfortunately, so far he was able to install only Ubuntu.

Re: Lenovo Ideapad U410

I've managed to install Arch Linux on my U410, though not easily. After identifying the problems I encountered(RAID,UEFI,etc) I determined the easiest solution was to remove windows, turn off the RAID in the BIOS, and the UEFI(it's under boot for some reason), reinstall Windows with the now much more simple setup and install Arch next to it. I had some issues with UUIDs of the harddisks(it manifested as GRUB2 not finding the disks(don't worry, just boot a live disk and find the real uuid of the disks and replace them in the GRUB2 cfg)) but other then that, everything seems to work fine. If you are planning to reinstall windows afterward, I recommend keeping the lenovo partition that contains the drivers because almost nothing works out of the box with default windows.

Re: Lenovo Ideapad U410

I installed Arch successfully on my U410 by doing as follows: backup image onto an external hard drive, turn RAID off (use AHCI instead, which probably left the HDD/SSD in an inconsistent state); I left UEFI on; completely wiped everything and simply installed Arch on the SSD assuming I didn't have UEFI. I have to double check for the UEFI part but I recall not having disabled it.

Re: Lenovo Ideapad U410

I know it's quite old thread, however, this might be useful to someone. I installed Arch Linux on my Lenovo U410 without killing any of the features that came with it. One key restore and raid array are still working. All I did was just added archlinux in the system without removing anything. Here's the method on my blog http://noelkurian.com/2013/03/dual-boot … apad-u410/
