[SOLVED] Terminal is slow to refresh.

Hi There Folks,

After the last update my terminal(s) have become annoyingly slow. The first thing I noticed was that lines don't scroll smoothly when you scroll across pages in emacs (no window) or vim--roughly a second to bring in new lines. I thought that it was a terminal issue, but the behavior is present in urxvt, terminator, gnome-terminal, and lxterminal. I don't appear to be having any other graphical issues when watching videos, or desktop effects, it just the terminals.

Additionally, when the screen is full, commands like ls, etc. respond rather slow as well. Roughly the same 1 second delay.

I have seen a few posts which describe similar issues with the nvidia drivers, and one that references the intel driver, but I want to see if anyone has any ideas before I try to downgrade my driver.

Thanks for any advice.

Alternatively, you could downgrade the driver, and post the result here for others to learn. This does seem to be a driver issue, though.

No problem with terminal (Xfce) or xterm on my Core i3 (tested with “find /” in a fullscreen terminal). I don’t have the very latest xterm though.

Re: [SOLVED] Terminal is slow to refresh.

Both gnome-terminal and XChat have been terrible for me since cairo-1.12, so I've kept running cairo 1.10 and waiting for it to be fixed (there are no Arch bugs open for it, but it isn't an Arch problem anyway).

Try downgrading cairo to the older version (this package is from a mirror that holds on to old packages) and see if it helps:

https://schlunix.org/archlinux/extra/os … pkg.tar.xz

Works for me anyway.

Re: [SOLVED] Terminal is slow to refresh.

I experienced a similar delay in my terminals (slow scrolling in rxvt-unicode and Terminal, particularly in vim), GPU: Intel Mobile 4 Series. Simply changing the terminal font solved the problem for me. So, this might be due to some font rendering problem.

Re: [SOLVED] Terminal is slow to refresh.

You should already have intel-dri.
There is a xf86-video-intel-uxa and xf86-video-intel-sna coming up in the updates, it might help.
I had a problem seemingly fixed with xf86-video-intel-git from the AUR.
Also try adding your user to the video group.

Re: [SOLVED] Terminal is slow to refresh.

What's the difference between xf86-video-intel, xf86-video-intel-uxa and xf86-video-intel-sna? I don't remember having to make a choice like this when I installed...

CLI Paste | How To Ask Questions

Arch Linux | x86_64 | GPT | EFI boot | refind | stub loader | systemd | LVM2 on LUKS
Lenovo x270 | Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-7200U CPU @ 2.50GHz | Intel Wireless 8265/8275 | US keyboard w/ Euro | 512G NVMe INTEL SSDPEKKF512G7L

Re: [SOLVED] Terminal is slow to refresh.

It just came up...uxa and sna are their respective acceleration methods.

Re: [SOLVED] Terminal is slow to refresh.

Thanks for all of the replies. Sorry for my lack of participation on this thread, but due to the 4th of July holiday, and some time contrained work, I haven't had a chance to get on. Anyway, I recetly upgraded to xf86-video-intel-uxa to no avail. I will try a different font, and try to downgrade cairo. The more I think about it, I don't think this is a driver issue else I would have crappy performance everywhere, but I don't, just in the terminal.

Thanks again, I'll keep you posted.

Re: [SOLVED] Terminal is slow to refresh.

Relevant upstream bug:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=50508

This is apparently a bug in the intel video driver, but downgrading cairo, cherrypicking the fix from their git, or moving to cairo-git from the AUR should fix it.  I've been running into this for a few weeks.

Holy sh*t batman! Switch from terminus to any other monospace font in the terminal and man doesn't the scrolling fly!! Working like it is supposed to. Let's call this solved.
Thanks everyone.

I wouldn't call changing fonts to a non-bitmap font a 'solution', rather it's a workaround.

I just changed from xf86-video-intel-uxa to xf86-video-intel-sna and it *is* actually solved, though.

Yeah, you are right, it was a workaround. Anyway, I also changed from xf86-video-intel-uxa to xf86-video-intel-sna, switched the font back to terminus and everything seems to be working as it should. Now can I call it solved ;-) ? Thanks!!

How's your cairo?  Does it work with the recent now?
