Random kernel panic since upgrade to 3.4 kernel

Hello fellow archers, I'm getting random kernel panics on a Sony Vaio Z laptop and I don't really know what to do about them.

The thing is the panics are random. My system either boots fine or I have to hard shutdown after 2 or 3 successive kernel panics. The panic seems to happen at the login in prompt and then there are these messages that don't really know how to decipher. After a few hard shutdowns my system goes back to normal, which is odd.

This coincided with a recent system update, so I suspect the kernel 3.4 or some other component may have something to do with it.

This is all I can gather now.

I am seeing the same thing on a ThinkPad x120e. I don't have GDM or the equivalent installed, but if the machine does kernel panic I don't even get to the normal login prompt.

I have also been experiencing issues such as X crashes (resulting in total system lockups) and kernel panics randomly since upgrading to 3.4.3. The system usually just locks up, but on one occassion I was returned the login screen.

Try to narrow down the issue to a specific package. If you suspect this to be an issue with the latest kernel; downgrade to a previous kernel and see if the crashes stop happening.

If so, open a bug report on the bug tracker.

(1) This probably is not a trivial task. In my case, fallback kernel started to panic right with the current kernel right after the upgrade. So it's "some other package". It takes a bit of expertise to pinpoint it.

(2) On the other hand, this heavyweight bug is bound to win some attention from the developers pretty soon. Keep up hope.

I downgraded to kernel 3.3.8-1 a day or two ago and didn't get any panics.

Upgraded to 3.4.4-2 an hour ago and got a panic after reboot. Another reboot and no panic.

It seems to me it's somehow related to 3.4. I have no way of pinpointing the exact cause. I can hardly understand the panic trace or whatever it's called:

I can confirm pretty much everything in this thread. I don't have any problems using kernel 3.3.8, but with kernel 3.4.3 (didn't test the latest yet) I get crashes while booting. Sometimes it just freezes in the login screen (using kdm), sometimes the laptop just turns itself off or reboots. My hardware is a thinkpad T420 (Sandy Bridge). I do have a discrete Nvidia card, but I disabled it in BIOS, so linux sees only the Intel graphics card, if it has anything to do with that.

I had this problem and figured it had to do with my specific type of wifi card, which is a realtek.

BTW, the computer would run fine, and it only crashed when using WIFI. But not immedeately, only
after a while, and the message looks similar to the one somebody else shows in a screen shot. If
you want to find out the problem, you might want to work in text mode (control+alt F1). To use the internet in text mode,
just use ssh or "links" or wget to get some data.

Using lspci, it shows as
"Network controller: Ralink corp. RT3060 Wireless 802.11n 1T/1R"

What I did to resolve the issue.

1) Do not use the WIFI, because it will crash the computer
2) Use a wired network card if you have one.
3) Install linux-lts (the long term older kernel)
4) Reboot and use linux-lts as kernel

I don't think this is related, as I don't have a Ralink wifi card. Mine is from Intel. Additionally, the crashes also happen before the wifi connects.

I can confirm this, too. I upgraded to 3.4.4-2 and the kernel panics occured occasionally. Like snoxu said, after a few reboots it's starting fine, otherwise it panics.
Then I installed the Long Term Support kernel (linux-lts) and now it's fine. I hope it'll be fixed soon.
I'm using a Lenovo Thinkpad X201.

BTW: Did someone reported this bug?

Same here on my Thinkpad X220. Random kernel panics at boot time or the system hangs shortly after login into gnome 3. But if boots up it runs with no problems.

same here on a Sony Vaio Z as well (2009 model) rather random kernel panics wit 3.4, although I find it to happen more often after resuming from suspend to RAM. Maybe also some strange connection to the new Nvidia 302.17 driver.

EDIT: works without any flaws when downgrading to 3.3.8 and Nvidia 295.53.

I would guess that it's not the nvidia driver. My desktop runs fine using Nvidia 302 and linux 3.4 with an old Intel Core 2 Duo. But my laptop (Intel Sandy Bridge i5) sometimes has kernel panics, where the laptop only has the internal intel gpu. So Maybe it's the combination of Sandy Bridge and 3.4 kernel which causes these problems.

I get panics with an Intel card.

(I have hybrid graphics, but I'm running the Intel card exclusively. Nvidia turned off in BIOS and drivers uninstalled)

I'm using an ralink usb wlan card with the ralink sta driver and had kernel panics on network traffic.
I have found the problem for me: the ralink sta driver

Some time ago I switched to the ralink sta driver because its connection quality is much better then with the rt2800 module, which comes with the kernel.
now i've blacklisted the ralink sta module (mine was named 'rt5370sta') and using the rt2800 again. since then i had no kernel panics anymore.

I thought it was my hardware that was failing, but when I got home to my parents the same thing happened. Both machines is running core2 processor with p31 and p35 chipset. This is a serious bug. Something I have noticed is that it is always cpu1 that is failing. First time I noticed it was when cpu1 was failing during boot and it booted with only one cpu. It did run stable then. I had a hard time trying it to boot with both, It eventually did, but I get a panic after a few hours up to 24 hours. Do you think Its a kernel bug or something with a package?

Kernel panics are very random (e.g. before starting the network daemon, during browsing with Firefox, after login... ). Downgrading to 3.3.7-1 is fine, no kernel panics. I'm using Intel Core 2 4400.

I'm experiencing same problem with kernel 3.4.4-2 (will try downgrading)

I have intel gma650 x3100 and Core 2 T5750, kernel panic occures randomly (even before boot finishes), but i've spotted them to be more frequent when changing screen resolution or framebuffer settings. Perhaps it's related ?

Edit: downgraded to linux 3.3.8-1, works without any issues.

That's exactly what I thought because the crash is hard and totally unpredictable, and then I remembered this thread (and finally caught a backtrace showing that the X "lockups" I've been having for several days were really kernel panics on "illegal opcode", my system was attempting some i/o on a jfs filesystem -- don't know if the crash is in jfs or timer code or interrupt handler...).

The panic comes along with kernel 3.4.1; I reverted to 3.3.3.

This panic is on a Sandy Bridge system with core i5, 16 GB of memory, four disks (two ssds, two 1 TB hard drives) with jfs and ext4 file systems. My kernel was built for corei7-avx and uses the BFS scheduler and BFQ i/o. Panics come during heavy load (compiling and/or encoding video). Panics come under kde 4.8.3 and Openbox 3.5.

I don't suppose my info helps anybody, except to say BEWARE KERNEL 3.4.1

I've also downgraded to kernel 3.3.8-1 a few days ago and have been panic free since.

Don't know the cause but I have an i7 620M.

Same here with all kernels newer than 3.3.8.1 on my Thinkpad X200.
Wifi card is an Intel 5100 AGN.

I have also been experiencing random kernel panics on my media centre. They happen both during video playback and when idling.

It's has a Sandy Bridge i3 and is using the on-board video to run XBMC.

I'll revert the kernel to 3.3.8.1 when I get home and see if that solves my problems too.

Update: I reverted to 3.3.4-2 (x86_64) and it's been running now for over 2 days without issue. I think I should also note that I'm using a USB 802.11n dongle (Atheros AR9170 based).

Hi,

I have the same issues here on my Thinkpad T510 (signature). The panic only occurs at boot in cold state, after powering the laptop off and on again, it just works flawless. I'm running the nvidia card only, my intel card is disabled in BIOS. Also, my laptop wont wake up from S3 Suspend to RAM. It just locks up and makes strange noises when I press the power button. I also have an intel wlan card.
Will know try to install the lts kernel...
