eeepc 701 running very hot

output of sensors during normal usage:

acpitz-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1: +54.0°C (crit = +90.0°C)

eeepc-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
fan1: 1000 RPM

This feels way too hot for normal usage.  Cannot be too clogged up with dust as it's relatively unused.  Asking this question as I dont want to tamper with fan control manually, as 1000rpm seems pretty fast to start with.  It gradually gets hotter and hotter during usage up to around 60C, with the tinny fan runnng all the while.

happens with and without the battrery

First, never underestimate the power of dust.

Second, do you have any "nonstandard" options on your kernel line (eg nohz nohpet ...)?

Re: eeepc 701 running very hot

Thanks.  I'm using toofishes's eee kernel.  I booted up the normal Arch one and at first, it appeared to be playing nice but it slowly heate up to a comparable temperature.  You're right, it's probably something to do with the fan.  It doesnt seem to be able to keep the temp down, just maintains it.  Will clean tomorrow and try another distros live cd to do some tests

Ok, I manually spun the fan right up to full speed, and the temperature still did not go down.  What's going on?

My 901:

┌─[Archer ~]
└─╼ acpi -t
Thermal 0: ok, 54.0 degrees C

Has run at that temp since I got it; never had a problem with it...

If you need another reference:
Just been doing some compiling on my 701.
Before I started, acpi -t returned 45 deg., after the compiling (~5 min at 100% CPU) was done, it was 55 deg.

Are you by any chance in Europe, where it's freakin hot currently? My Aspire One won't go under 52°, and during compiling it goes up to 68°. Usually it goes under 50° regularly and easily. But not in this freakin hot weather.

No mate, I'm in Australia, where it's currently quite cold (Well, relatively speaking. About 24 degrees here in the tropics).

On the other hand, 52 degrees, as opposed to my 48 (in idle), is not thaaat much of a difference, really, is it? Especially if you take the surrounding temperature into account.
