System freeze after upgrading to nvidia 302.17 and linux > 3.3.8

After upgrading linux and updating to nvidia 302.17, my system freezes when I launch Firefox. Since 302.17 requires a version of Linux greater than 3.3.8, I can't uninstall/revert one and then see if it fails. The kernel log shows nothing during or before a freeze, and SSH sessions are dropped when a freeze occurs, so it's not X. The KDE compositor starts fine, so I don't think it's caused by accessing the graphics card. If anyone could help with this, that'd be great, because I'm pretty much lost. Thanks!

Hardware information:
CPU: AMD FX-6100 3.3 6-core
GPU: Nvidia GTX560 (EVGA 01G-P3-1561-AR)
RAM: 16GB

Software information (for working config, not broken one):
uname output:

Linux plutonium 3.3.8-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Jun 5 15:20:32 CEST 2012 x86_64 GNU/Linux

lsmod output:

No it doesn't. Any Nvidia driver works with any kernel.

When I try to install the updated nvidia driver, pacman automatically includes linux v3.4.4 in the package list and if they're both installed, it won't let me downgrade nvidia without downgrading linux too.

Yeah, but that's because of packaging, not because of the driver. The obvious solution: make your own packages.
