how to turn off monitor after a given time
so can anyone tell me how exactly this can be achieved?
under display->powercontrol i already enabled power management but "standby after", "suspend after" and "power off after" don't seem tow work here
"make aware of power management" in screensaver doesn't change anything.

I have no display > powercontrol in openbox, gnome or fluxbox, What are you talking about?

You have to enable DPMS in your xorg.conf by adding
Option "DPMS"at the end of your monitor section.
