[SOLVED] HP Envy 15 3040nr issues

My laptop has an intel 2670qm quad core i7 processor with multi-threading.
The graphics cards are Inte HD 3000 and AMD Radeon 7690M
It has "Beats" audio and a "mac-styled" touchpad.

My problems:
1. My sound is extremely unstable and delays my startup at login, sometimes to the point of crashing. Sometimes activating a flash video or animation with sound will allow the sound to work.
2. The sound icon does not appear sometimes in the gnome-shell topbar.
3. The screen starts off at the lowest brightness every time. Is there a way to fix that?
4. How do I start ~/.Xmodmap at boot? I have yet to find anything about this.
5. My touch pad: http://cdn4.digitaltrends.com/wp-conten … yboard.jpg
The bottom part is separated by a border and these parts act as individual sections of the touchpad, but on linux it all acts as one and I have major issues with touch.

I have alsa and pulse-audio both installed btw. I also have to use lxdm instead of gdm because gdm NEVER loads.

Solutions I found:
1. make/open open /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and type:  blacklist snd-usb-audio
2. Solution 1
3. Wait for better upstream support for this laptop.
4. Add the Xmodmap to .config/autostart and use gdm.
5. Wait for synptics driver improvement.

Re: [SOLVED] HP Envy 15 3040nr issues

1. I assume you followed the wiki for using alsa as the backend for pulseaudio? Is there a reason you have to use pulse? With the amount of problems you are getting, have you tried just using standalone alsa?
2. Probably related to 1. Just a guess.
3. Assuming you're using initscripts, you can do something like "echo # > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness" in your /etc/rc.local. At least thats where the brightness setting is for my laptop.
4. Stick it in your ~/.xinitrc.
5. I would do some googling. Maybe you need some special driver from the aur.

Re: [SOLVED] HP Envy 15 3040nr issues

I should have mentioned, I'm using systemd alongside arch's init. I installed initscripts-systemd and systemd-arch-units and added init=/bin/systemd to my grub kernel parameter. (Systemd is so AWESOME)
Can you use pure alsa on gnome 3.x?
And I don't have ~/.xinitrc

As for the clickpad, I found this:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Touchpad_Synaptics
I do not understand whatsoever the section "Buttonless TouchPads (aka ClickPads)." This should fix my problem, but I cannot figure out what I am supposed to do.

If you're using Gnome3, I guess you're stuck was pulseaudio. I can't help you much with that.

Looks like with Gnome, you need to use ~/.xprofile.

Since you're using systemd, I can only think of 2 options. The easier one, you can just download the initscripts-systemd package and use the rc.service (although the wiki says its not recommended, it's the easiest fix). The other, you can create your own little script with the 1 line and create a service file for it that runs it.

What are you having trouble understanding in the wiki? The first example says it sets up the right click button. Just copy and paste it.

Re: [SOLVED] HP Envy 15 3040nr issues

Ok, I cannot figure why my system hangs at startup. I think that it's because of the Beats audio since I cannot turn up or turn down the volume without everything freezing.
Also, I've discovered that my intel graphics card is active. I have read about vga_switcheroo and I would like to know how to turn ON my ati graphics card and turn off the Intel card.. I installed this:
https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=51704
But I believe it blacklists the ati card.
As for my clickpad, I do not understand what I am supposed to do. Do I make a file, and where do I put it?
And without an ~/.xinitrc, how can I start ~/.Xmodmap at boot?
Thank you!
EDIT: I tried putting a script in ~/.config/autostart but the script does not actually activate. Why?

Re: [SOLVED] HP Envy 15 3040nr issues

Ok, so I solved my sound problem. I created /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and added the code:
blacklist snd-usb-audio

Now, I'm going to try to figure out how to use my ati graphics, reverse gnome-shell scrolling, my click pad problem, and my brightness at boot issue.
Edit: I solved my reverse scrolling by using gdm. However, it only works for some programs. In nautilus for eg, the scrolling is not reversed.
