IWill kk266+R Raid controler problems.

I've been running arch for a while now on this board w/o using the raid controler but I've recently picked up a pair of new hard drives and I'd like to get the raid working if possible.  I'm running the stock kernel26 2.6.12.2-1.  I'll assume that I don't have the right drivers installed or something to that extent but I'm not sure where to go from here.  I haven't tried the scsi kernel yet.  The scsi kernel on the install cd would hang my system and I'm a newbie when it comes to playing with the kernel so I don't want to get to a point where I can't recover.  Can I install the scsi kernel side by side with my existing one so I can just point grub back to the old kernel image if it doesn't work or will I need to compile a custom kernel?

The raid on this board has been nothing but a head ache ever since I got it.  I believe that the controler is an AMI MegaRAID IDE 100 controler.  The manual it came with claimed it was something else, but the ami drivers worked for it under windows (which concidentaly were not the drivers that came with the board).  Anyway here is some info that maybe useful

The two WDC WD1600JB-00GVA0 drives are the drives connected to the raid controler.  It seems to be recognized as a gerneric ide controler card.  Both disks show up as hde and hdg, I have a raid0 array configured in the controler setup but the kernel doesn't seem to see it.  A modprobe of cmd64x, which hwd suggests for the card, returns FATAL: Module cmd64x not found.
